Knee cartilage - physio, running

Guys, anyone help me in pointing me somewhere to help? had 3 operations on my knees for torn meniscus in the past, has left me with about 40% in one knee and 60% in the other after removing the rubbish. I really want to start up running again, but today for example, anything over 1K my knees will just swell and hurt like hell. I know running is not the greatest thing for dodgy joints, but anyone point me toward some physio, exercises, advice?

Not looking to do marathons, but would love to be able to do the local park run 5k with my kids..

For the love of grasshoppers don't start running unless you want to further complicate things. Cycling yes, swimming yes, low impact sports. Even indoor athletics should just about do as long as it's 30 mins or more lol.

I was running 10k a week up till 2010 and then I was drunk at new year and crumbled in the Ice onto my knee under my own weight and pretty much crumbled any chance on me running again. Now if I run a wee bit my IT band just flares up and my knee swells. Been told not to as well.
 
Scott, with your knees, you simply cannot do anything that is classed as an "impact" sport

Running, Jumping, Skateboarding, Roller blading, parachuting etc are all total non starters

By all means try cycling, or if you just want to keep up with the kids and look cool, buy a Segway, Or you could take up Golf (Cough Cough)

Rubbish!! Thanks for the advice chaps, Kind of thought it was a non starter but worth looking at. Will stick to the MTB and will have to make Mrs R take the kids on the park run.

Seriously though, as the shock absorber is severely diminshed all you're going to do is more damage. Cycling, swimming or Monopoly I'm afraid.
 
Have you been given any knee strengthening routines by your physio? Would be my first port of call if you're serious about running again. Cycling and swimming must help I imagine but there's a tipping point where you just have to call it a day with impact sports.
I had to pack in playing football about 4 years ago as my right knee was so painful on a Monday morning. I was gutted as I'd played constantly ever since I can remember and I'd hoped to play in the over 40's league, but it just wasn't to be.

last contact with a physio was 2008 after my second op on my left knee. not seen one of done anything other than cycling since really!
 
In your shoes, I'd be getting an appointment with a sports physio and see what they had to say. You only get one pair of knees mate, no point completely knacking them by pushing them too far.
 
Did the op make much of a difference. I tore mine years ago and having seen a specialist i trust many times over the years have been holding off having it done. Have played football and generally kept the muscles around it strong but still get pains and swelling its only this year that i'm not playing football due to the pain.

It took away the pain from walking, i can now walk fine. 18 holes of golf is about my limit of walking without swelling or pain, so yes the operation was a success in the fact i can walk, just not very far!
 
I went on a big fitness push at the beginning of this year and spent Jan, Feb and March running 5k in the gym after my workout 5/6 days a week.

When I started playing golf again in April I could barely get the ball out the hole such was the pain in my knees. That was a big shock, and as much as I loved the running, I stopped it immediately, I was pain free within a few weeks.

Don't risk it.
