In recent weeks my left knee, which was reconstructed about 15 years ago, has started to feel quite sore after a round. The pain is generally on the outside of the knee where the weight goes onto at the swing finish, and I was wondering whether to buy a knee brace as well as trying to splay the foot more open at address. I used a neoprene support for years before the cruciate graft and never liked the hot sweaty feel.

Do you use a better brace that you can recommend?

Cruciate and medial here, snapped both in 2003. 10 ops later its still knackered (even had to have a screw removed) so know the pain you mean.
I use a metal cage brace (Donjoy) which was designed for skiing but works excellently well for golf. Quite pricey at just shy of £300 and needs to be measure fitted.

I've looked at the cheaper Donjoy and they look good, I really just want to stop sideways movement of the joint, does yours do that?

Yeah, the way they are designed (or at least my one) is that there is pressure points at the hinge that push the knee joint in from the sides. Keeping it steady. The metal hinge is strong so only allows straight forward and backward movement. I still suffer from 12° extension lock out so the brace has a lock out pin that stops me over extending when it gets tired and sore.

That sounds perfect Greig. Mine isn't anywhere as bad but I think an early intervention may prolong my golf life before a probable knee replacement and the inevitable increase in my scrap value!

Good choice Chris. I have been told it will be another 14 years for replacement. Lost 2/3 of my cartellidge and part of my knee cap. Still have the nerve damage from the op so use a brace as much as possible or would be out of the game for long periods of time.

Chris donjoy are good braces, I used them in mx for years.

There is actually one called a loader or unloader, I can't remember who it's made by but like you my left leg is blown to bits. I want to try the golf brace but didn't look into it fully

I don't know the price of titanium and cobalt but I certainly think it's better than bone!

Just asked a mate who does martial arts. He says mcdavids with side bars if knees not completely knackered. He used a Donjoy snowboarding brace before his knee was rebuilt.

I've got one with hinged side supports that you can try if you like - just to see if it works for you.

If you are interested, I'll give it to Leftie to bring down to Cooden on Friday.

It's very well used but still does the job.

That's very kind of you, what make/model is it and I can look it up?

Can't do it tonight - I'd wake HID up looking for it.

I'll dig it out tomorrow and get back to you. Not sure that it will have a make or model on it though. A physio gave it to me when I had bad medial ligament problems.

You are quite welcome to try it out anyway Just to see if that type of brace will work for you.

About £200 Baz

I used the donjoy armour range when riding. Was the only brace at the time that was medically approved. They were £500 each but the investment saw me ride for another 10 years injury free even with no acl and damaged cartlidge

If looking for a brace prince should be the last thing that enters your head, a better investment than a new set of irons
