Hey guys,
I am going away next week and staying about 2 minutes from Kington golf course.

According to the website it is the highest golf course in the UK so I am thinking of playing it a couple of times.

Has anyone played it? How did you find it?

Cheers

Phil

I played a round here in the first week of July. I'd heard good things and was not disappointed. Firm, smooth and fast greens throughout the course and for many of the holes lush fairways- despite the sheep which freely graze them! The views are also great; once you reach the mid point of your round, after a gentle climb the first few holes, you are rewarded with wonderful 360* panoramic views over much of shropshire, powys and the surrounding counties. I played midweek and remember thinking the green fee (whatever it was!) was a bit of a bargain. The sky threatened rain throughout the round but fortunately it held off and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, as did my partners. Many of the undulations on / around the greens make for very interesting approach play and great fun chipping and pitching if you can accept that the good and bad bounces will even themselves out over the 18 holes. One slight complaint would be that some tee box locations are not clearly shown from the previous green which is obviously a potential problem for visitors if not members, especially when the hole layout is fairly irregular if I remember correctly. Overall however this did little to dent my kington experience which was aided further by a birdie at the par 3 15th I think it was, and then an Eagle finish at the short par 4 18th. Two of the best holes on the back 9!

Anyway to summarise- a very friendly pro shop combined with a warm and inviting clubhouse after the round made for a very pleasant golfing experience. Kington definitely offers value for money in my opinion, and comes highly reccomended as a result of varied holes, excellent putting surfaces and on a clear day a wonderful location.

... Just bare in mind the fact that you are playing at an altitude which at some stages of my round seemed to be level with the clouds-expect wind, and if possible take a skycaddie to help with yardages! If I think about it (I'm very rarely on here these days, I just stumbled across this thread and thought I'd reply) I'll try and post a couple of pictures I took during my round which may whet your appetite :)

Here are a few pics I took if you are interested. It really was a 'fun' golf course. That's not to say it's easy though- much of the 'rough' is brutal...well so the rest of the group tell me  :D :D

Cheers smiffy, not checked that out yet but that could be a useful site for future as well.

Sounds good from your report eagle. I could do with a birdie and an eagle on the back 9 to keep the scores down.

Like you said if the weather holds out then we should have a good couple of rounds there. It looks like it is pretty open to the elements.

I will let you know how i get on when I'm back on 16th.

I've played it.

I've also driven the last (par 4) a few times and always then 3 putt.

Fun. Remember to take your best legs.....
