My daughter (9) has started to show a mild interest in golf. We're lucky to be close to Edinburgh's kids course and I'd like to get her into the sport.

Does anyone else have nippers playing?I'm gonna start having a wee look about for clubs and wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

My 12yo son plays regularly with me, i bought him a Wilson 1/2 set about 2 years ago which consists of a driver, 5 & 7 irons, a wedge and a putter which has done him ok up to now.

He's getting too big for them now though so i'm getting him a proper full set soon, already had him measured up, just need the cash!

How about a driver, 5 iron, 7 iron PW, putter and bag for 7-12 year olds, brand new for £50?

Thats nearly the same set i got my son, that must be the 08/09 set as my sons has a blue bag and the irons are slightly different.

Its done him well so far but when we're out on the course now he's starting to use my clubs a fair bit as having only 3 irons and a driver in your bag is very restrictive!!

Had a look at them Bob, seems to fit the requirements. I'm gonna have a wee look on gumtree to see if anyone local has something cheaper, I'd be a wee bit miffed if I paid £50 only to be her next fad.

I always think that kids should just start on the short game. If they can concentrate on putting and chipping, then progress onto longer irons and woods.

You do not need to spend much money, if you go to any boot sale there are always old clubs which can be cut down.

Ideally SW,9,7 and putter to start with.

I agree, but.........THEY want to hit the driver :)

I've just bought our 12 year old Son a set of "Confidence" ladies clubs. He was just a tad too small to use one of my old sets, so these are the ideal size for him. Full set of irons, graphite shafted, came complete with a hybrid as well! Got the lot for just under £50.00. He seems to be getting on OK with them.

My lad is (a small) 4 year old. Bought him the smallest clubs available and let him hit them at the driving range.

Despite them being too long, and him standing too close to the ball and having it too far to the left he is hitting the ball quite well.

I think I have the next Rory McIlroy on my hands.

That or he is learning bad habits that are going to cost me a fortune in lessons to get rid of...

My wee man is only 2.5 and I cant wait to get him a set of clubs, he has plastic ones and plastic balls at the moment and he loves bashing the ball, furniture, dog, daddies legs or anything else that gets in the way.

really had to laugh at that my little sister likes to try and play shes five but shes not really into it i try and help.

My girl plays. She has a set of Nicklaus from "you know who".

She had two sets of dunlops from sports world before that (aged 6 and 9) which were ok and cheap-issimo.

I would have gone for Ping Moxie but, hey, kids grow....

We have kept the 21 degree driver from the Dunlop set and I often hit it when I take her to the club to practice. It works very well (seriously) and even I can hit it 150 yards.

For the money, I'd go Dunlop again, but the only sets were boys ones......

t.b.h. most ranges/shops do Masters kids clubs, but they could work out a bit pricey. I'd say the Wilsons would do fine.

Wacky,
I know many do do it, and it is the cheapest option to get your kids playing. But you do need to be a little bit wary about just cutting old adult clubs down, as the end product can be too heavy, and more importantly, too stiff-shafted for kids to be able to swing effectively.
The shorter you cut down a club, the stiffer the shaft becomes, and kids - who have much slower swing speeds too - will only be able to hit low runners, when all they really want to do is see it soar away like mummy or daddy. Purpose-built, properly weighted, suitably shafted junior clubs are the best option, if, of course, funds allow!

Is it just me getting old and cynical but do kids today not only look better golfers thanks to clubs suited to their size but have decent swings at a ridiculously early age.

I think its great there are kids clubs available now. In the good old days it would an old hand me down that you adapted to swing as best you could. Now its all graphite shafts and shiny bright heads.

Hey thought you might want a juniors view. When i first started i bought a set from the local paper for £10 as i was unsure. It consisted of 5,7,9 irons. 1 wood and putter.
When i was about 12 i bought a ladies set from my pro shop for about £50 for the full set.
