I'm just back from a night in Bournemouth hospital. Looks like I'm in the process of passing 4mm stone. I can honestly say it was the most painful experience of my short life :o

Even more so than losing to Rich at 4bbb but unfortunately not as rare :)

Any one had one? And does 1 increase the chances of more? Any good tips for avoiding them in future?

A friend of mine really suffered with them, not had them personally but i feel your pain knowing what he went through! All he found was to drink tons of water, and i mean tons. Think he was doing 5+ litres a day. yes, you visit the loo a lot, but which is worse?

Keep your pecker up nick ;)

Friend of mine is very susceptible to them. He's just had one removed - 18mm. Ouch.
As has been said, dietary changes an help. He has to watch his calcium intake.

Yes, and it is unbelievably painful. Spent one night by the toilet doubled in pain, and passed out for bit. Then pain went away very quickly.

Yep. Keeled over at work in pain last year. Kidney stone. Mine was caused by no keeping hydrated enough over long periods. So basically all the waste was crystalising.

I was told to keep well hydrated and if you are fond of more than a few tipples then exercise caution as your kidneys produce more waste and you are prone to dehydration. That was all the advice the dietician gave and I have been problem free for 11 months.

Oh and the worst part is constantly feeling the need to pee the closer it gets to passing. Its bloody annoying.

I dont have a kidney Stone problem, but I have a narrowing in a tube in the right kidney which sometimes catches normal grain of sand sized stones that would otherwise pass through.

It is absolute agony and im probably going to have an op to sort it out,

As a result of the narrowing, the right kidney drains much slower than the left and as a result it is distended and misshapen with a pool of gunk that isnt able to drain,
So they are going to have to reshape the kidney, chop it about a bit and also sort out the narrowing, so quite a big op

Great

To the OP the best pain killers are diclofenac in suppository form, and if you are in Hospital and offered Oramorph take it :)

Good luck

That was their painkiller of choice. The nurse didn't even buy me dinner after administration :o

Sorry to hear of your problems Nick, though you always have been a bit of a pain in the derriere.;) I have a lot of sympathy for your nurse.

Must be a sign of getting old.

Alas been there , done that , got the tee shirt on 4 occasions :(

Last one was just over 3 years ago in NZ, due to rural location it was quicker for HiD to drive me to hospital, numerous stops on the way to be ill. Once there was whisked into A&E , suppository pain relief , drip in the arm before they took my details and then MRI scan within 2 hours. Little blighter soon passed through thankfully :)

Have a speedy recovery

A friend of mine was thought to have a kidney stone but it turned out to be cancer of the kidney. Once removed, he has recovered well so hopefully you won't go down that route.

Best of luck.
Fingers crossed ;)
It's a 4mm stone the ct scan confirmed. It's through the kidney & waiting to be expelled. Nice !! :o

No wonder I can't recruit nurses quick enough. I'm sure it doesn't mention doing that on the posters
We shared a 'moment'. That's the kind of reward a salary can't provide.
Feel free to use that in your overseas recruitment ;)
They'll come from the 4 corners of the globe for a glimpse of my under carriage :o

I had them. Christmas Eve 1977 collapsed at work, found unconscious in the bathroom, rushed to hospital. Discharged the day after Boxing Day. Unbelievably painful, thought I was dying. The Sister told me to never listen to women who say child birth is the most painful thing, as I had been through worse and I am sticking to that :D
I was told they would probably come back but although I had pain in my Kidneys for many years when needing a wee (too much info) that seems to have subsided now and they haven't reoccured - touch wood.

A guy at my gym is a successful mma fighter and a real hard bag of nails bloke. he turned up to the gym one morning with a little niggle in his side. 20 minutes later he's on the floor in a ball crying like a baby.

I really hope i dont ever get them

I've had kidney stones 6 times. One time the stone wouldn't budge so had lithotripsy to try and break it down, but it didn't work. That hurt like hell too. Ended up having a 'camera and basket' pushed up the old boy to retrieve the stone. Thankfully I was knocked out for that little ordeal! Had to pea through a tea strainer for 2 weeks after the op to catch some smaller stones they couldn't get to. Mine were caused by not drinking enough water. As others have said, the pain is something else!
