Ken on the course...

For a guy that looks like Mr Bean, I love watching and listening to him, he really does have a great insight and shows us things that the camera just cant translate.

Ken on the course is the only good thing about the Beeb covering the golf.

Also think Andrew Cotter is very good, and even Hazel Irvine has grown on me (which is a bit worrying!!!) But the Sky boys and Di Stewart probably have the edge! Shame the Beed can't poach Wayne Riley for the Open and the Masters as I love his on-course comments

What I've noticed about Hazel is that she seems to have a lot of general and historical golf. knowledge

Hazel is sooooo much better than Lineker as host. I hate Cotta, Torrance and James though. Cotta in particular comes over as too swotty, has a horrible voice and is clearly trying too hard. James never seems to have a clue whats going on. Lost count of the number of times he's said great shot and the ball has ducked into a bunker or rough. Torrance is ok but again tries too hard to be witty instead of doing the simple things like describing the action.

Its funny how the great commentators (Allis in his prime), Maskell, Pickering, Carpenter, Arlott, McClaren, Moore etc all had a simplistic way of describing what was going on. Sometimes they did the best thing possible and let the picture do the talking. The poignant pause seems to have gone out of fashion and it is gabble, gabble, gabble all the time usually with little to say and often providing incorrect information.

Rant over

Love Hazel. Getting better looking by the year as well.
Really can't be doing with Sam "beautiful" Torrance.
My wife and I were going to start a drinking game where you had a drink everytime Torrance said "beautiful" until we realized that we'd be blitzed in about half an hour.
James is OK and the guy on the range is too, although I'd rather have Dougie back.

Other than replaing Van De Velde with Riley, and Maureen with Boxy, BBC wins hands down.

Torrance and James are nae too good right enough, but they're still way ahead of the boring dirge of Euan Murray & co.

James is a complete muppet, rarely says anything with insight and wrongly believes he is a comedian.

Torrance is a good solid centre, and allows someone else to add the humour. Grady fits that bill well.

Riley is terrible and VdV is only barely better. Maureen Madill actually adds better insight than either of them.

Torrance is OK I think, but no time for James at all. As has been said he seems to think he's a comedian and feels the need to play up to it. Probably stems from his Ryder cup press conferences where he got the odd chuckle for being a knob, shame that the funniest thing about him was his crap RC captaincy. VDV is OK considering this is his first year doing it, prefer Riley though.

Allis is past his best but still great imho, going to see his show / talk later this year

I agree that Allis is the best but now past it, at this year's Masters he did frustrate me hugely with his seemingly constant moaning. Must have been a bad week!

So if you could have a 'dream' line-up, who would it be?

I'll go for Allis as lead commentator (does anyone else think that he wants to do a 'Tommy Cooper' and peg it live on air?!!) with Ken Brown, Andrew Cotter and Wayne Grady from the Beeb. Torrance is ok, but Mark James is rubbish! Think Euan Murray is good but tend to find both him and Bruce Critchley pretty dull!

Out on the course has to be Richard Boxall, Wayne Riley and Howard Clark.

In the studio presenting highlights / round up etc - Hazel Irving (sorry Di!) and Rob Lee, with Mark Roe adding some 'expert' analysis.

The fun we could have with this! Could transfer to 'Out of bounds' and do the same for football, rugby and cricket!!!

IMO Allis has been past his prime for over 10 years, but he's still just about ok.

Ken is the best we have in this country.

And I know there's absolutely no chance of ever getting him, but Feherty is brilliant, and would grace any tv coverage.

Torrance is the worst of the bunch by a mile.

Simpering, sycophantic and with a permanent hard-on for Woods. Also has the temerity to talk about the challengers as if he was ever a major force in golf himself, rather than the journeyman pro he was.

Ken and Grady are the only thing holding it together, although I will confess to warming to Irvine considerably over the years.

Agree Ken is the best, Gradyand James I can only take so much of, Hazel is great, Torrance is poor, it's his use of the word magnificent for a 2 foot putt or the like that annoys the most. Despite Allis's mistakes I still like him. Really don't like Andrew Cotter much, ok for rugby but not golf. Maureen is ok in my book. Jean van de Velde is doing a good job too.
