I had been struggling with my short irons and chipping for the last few weeks. Discovered during a round today that setting up with my head a bit more down improved my ball striking for these areas of my game quite a lot! Think I had been holding my head too high and squinting down my nose at the ball! I realise that 'keep your head down' can be bad advice, but you should at least be looking squarely at the ball. :)

I would get to a pro ASAP, as soon as you find that magic solution go capitalise on that

If not its either going to ingrain a fault as you strive for that same feeling after time or you will lose it before you benefit.

I got the impression that holding my head too high was causing my shoulders to turn on the wrong plane, making my swing over-complicated!

probably.....

which also suggests that the reason this particular solution works for you with those clubs is that it naturally restricts your back swing - possibly to a better timing scenario.

anyhow, no doubt the 'where's my length with my mid irons gone?' thread will be along soon enough for most here.

No problems with my driving, fairway woods/hybrids and long irons. It was only my short irons and chipping, and pitching that were suffering. Setting up with my head a bit lower probably puts my shoulder turn on a more on plane arc.

There will be a fella along soon from the NW who may b able to give you a few tips..........

He has a training regime but it involves kebabs, 12 pints of cider and motorway roundabouts.;)

One thing I've done in the past for putting is to look at the back of the ball with your left eye, it may work on chipping also.

Get a lesson. Feel vs real are usually two different things. It may not be as simple as the head being too high.
I'm not forcing my head down, just looking a bit more squarely at the ball for the shorter shots. Seems to make chipping much easier as I just have to rock my shoulders, something like a long putt. :)

Just a quick progress report on this. I have been trying to look a bit more squarely at the ball for all my shots and seem to be hitting the ball very nicely and generally off the sweet spot. I am not forcing my head down or anything, just getting it more over the ball. The biggest area of improvement is my short game, chipping and putting, which had always been a bit dodgy before. Also my swing feels easier as my shoulder turn feels more in line with my swing plane and I am not having to coordinate two things at the same time. :)
