Money List Winner
Well I've been a good boy this year and courtesy of the missus, a sale of an old wedge, some competition winnings and a little contribution myself I got some new SM4 wedges. When I bought my original wedges 2.5 years ago it was at the same time as my irons and I got the same shafts PX5.5.
These worked great on full shots but I also found them much trickier to use on partial shots or those delicate shots around the green. So in my new Vokeys I have got some KBS Wedge shafts (stiff). They look stunning and the black nickel finish certainly does reduce glare.
In terms of performance I have to say I am stunned by the difference. Up till now I've never really appreciated how much difference a wedge shaft could make. I practiced with them for about an hour yesterday and took them on the course for a round this morning. Now at the end of the day they are just a piece of equipment and they are not going to transform your game overnight, but the potential is promising.
Up until now I've been a bit tentative around the greens particularly on small pitches and chips. It will take me a bit of time to learn the new distances for full shots but I was hitting some great small pitches today. It's difficult to describe the difference in sensation but my PX5.5s felt like iron bars in comparison. I had no problem out of bunkers today, which usually is a weakness of mine. If anything I came up too short, too often because of my previous tentative habits. Over time I will become more confident and will be able to be more aggressive with my short game as these shafts will really help me to do.
There is one small draw back. They definitely launch the ball much higher and aren't as penetrating as the PXs were, but at the end of the day I'd much rather be able to allow for that and have the improved control around the green.
I think the responsiveness and smoothness of the shaft will help me become a better short game player in time and if you are in the market for new wedges I'd suggest giving these shafts a try.
