Just looking to the Forums thoughts on this scenario....
With so many posts on Etiquette and slow play lately i came across another one this morning....

The course was running slow today all over really... We were keeping time with the groups in front all morning and had no need of calling anyone through until the 13th where a wayward tee shot by me left us foraging in the long stuff for a bit.... We called through a 2 ball that caught us up as the group in front were only just off the 14th tee we werent exactly going anywhere.....
Anyway we let the lads through and played on.... As you can imagine the were also let through by the fourball that we were keeping time with so things slowed just a tad more until everyone got moving again.... Anyway while on the 15th green putting the group in front were only teeing off on the 16th but the group behind us a 4ball also were waiting on our green...... But as i was putting 2 of them hit and the balls landed a yard short of the front of our green..... Now i know most on here would agree.... A ball dropping that close makes a distinctive sound.......

Whats your view on this..... We were finishing our hole the group in front were just teeing off and the group behind were waiting on the fairway.... I just thought it was a little out of order..... Not so much in the fact that the shouldnt have done it but my thoughts were that if one of them had actually hit a club out of the screws then it could easily have come down on top of us..... As it was they were hitting in from about 170mtrs..... I find it strange that you wouldnt play to hit the middle of a green from that distance.... Well i do anyway.....

What I'd like to do is pick their balls up and throw them in the deep stuff or confront them and ask what they were playing at. There is never ever ever an excuse for hitting balls at a group in range.

Realistically though, as I dont like confrontation, I'd have given them my meanest look and ignored them.

After that incident I'd be even less likely to offer them to play through.

I would have shouted fore very loudly , then when they got nearer I would have asked for a explanation . Maybe a letter to the council would be in order, re dangerous play.

The ironic thing was I was playing with the club Vice captain as well... Made for amusing conversation......

THe last time that happened to me, I was waiting for the green ahead to clear and I stood on the ridge so that the guy on the tee box could see me, as once over the ridge you're invisible but still in range of a good shot.

Anyhoo the guy on the tee box got impatient and launched one which landed a little past us, as the green cleared took my shot and when passing the shot from the bloke behind I picked up and popped it in front of a large tree with no clear path to the green.

Definiately out of order! Maybe pushing some limits of accuracy at that distance but well within range for most and no
Need to hit onto a green when your putting regardless of anything that's gone before. Let alone when it's not even your fault it's slow I would be having words in commitee ears and there would of been hand signals at the Time.

this is a tough call , the fact it happened is wrong , no doubt , you got to remember tho, that if you do decide to do or say something youd better be willing to accept the consequences mate.... ive no problem with it happening once, that could be a genuine mistake , but if it keeps happening id pick it up and bring it back to the guy .. i know what could happen in doing so and i accept the consequences ..

A good one to do if its a blind shot that comes near ya is for one of ye to lie down as if ya got hit , rest of the group then flap a bit .. get up as if your sore but ok and ask the guy for his details ,and tell him to report to the clubhouse to fill out an incident report as you plan on suing him ... that will get his attention

I say this on any thread where someone has been hit into.

I standby their ball and wait for them to approach their ball and give them a chance to explains themselves.

If the explanation is plausible, I give them that one. If they do it again, I'm not so understanding :D

hang on fellas before you all hang them out to dry, were they old fellas or players who realistically cannot hit 190yds normally?

we've all hit a shot not thinking we could reach, some knowing they cannot reach so worst case is the ball trickles on the green with a decent bounce....

Just playing devils avocado:smirk:

Years ago a friend of mine was playing Gullane No1 for the first time on his own.
Two elderly ladies were in front but keeping good time.

On the 7th he miss-judged the slope and his drive finished a few yards behind them.
As he approached the green he went up to explain what had happened and apologised.
The ladies then invited him to play through, he declined saying he did not want to disrupt their game and he was quite happy enjoying the course.
The ladies then insisted he play through with a very polite 'Miss jean Brodie' voice of ''Ah but young man, we would feel much safer with you in front of us''.
He said he felt like a 5 year old.

Well i did give them that benefit Pal.... I usually am pretty laid back,..... And if it was just the one ball from the 4 then i would be ok with it... But 2 from four was taking the proverbial a little......
I didnt say anything and we just plodded on our way again.... I just found it a little off putting for my partners..... I was after chipping stone dead from about 60mtrs for my 3rd shot so i tapped in and was tending the flag for the rest while watching the fourball waiting behind on the fairway..... I just thought it was a little out of order....

..... Brilliant..

So what did your Vice Captain say?

Good question. As a one off I'd accept it but if it happened more than once I'd be asking for an explanation and apology. It seems to be an issue around a lot of clubs but how it is dealt with or managed seems a difficult one. Personally I will always err on the side of caution and wait for the group in front to be out of my range. Let's face it, it don't take long to walk 230 yards!
