I was looking for advice on clubs. I've just started to play golf and have been given lots of advice on what clubs to buy.

Please could someone advise me on what brand of club to buy that will suit me as a beginner but will also see me through when I start improving so I don't have to replace then in 6 months or so.

Thanks

Steve

A cheap as chips set of game improvement irons. Something that will help you get the ball in the air.

Unfortunately I went down the very route your trying to avoid so i cant even suggest anything for you.

Steve,

i recently started up again and as a show of commitment to myself went and got fitted for new irons at AG. Ended up with some mizuno JPX800 HD's. They cost over £300 and with a bit of hindsight and more patience would have possibly gone for second hand pings but I still like the clubs.

If you go to AG they stock some very good clubs, 2nd hand and you'll have the advantage of being able to hit those versus the new clubs on the shelf. If you go in when quiet they'll spend along time with you and you'll be able to hit whatever you like and in whatever price range you desire. But yes, you're on the better path in my opinion spending a reasonable amount first off. Just be sure you're happy with what you get and don't be afraid to walk out if ya not!

And if you do have a local course, pop in and see the pro. I think this is the bit I regret not doing. Also Read up on here using the search function, there's some good advice.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I've returned to golf and I've just bought some lovely TaylorMade Burner 2.0 irons 4-PW. They are aimed at the high handicapper and have allot of forgiveness built into the design. They also do an OverSize version (bigger club face) again aimed at the high handicapper.

Also, look at Cobra S3 and S3 Max irons, very good irons aimed at the high handicapper.

Checkout eBay and don't be afraid to post a link to ask for people's opinion.

Any of the Ping G range (all excellent game improvement irons) obviously depends what you want to pay as to how current model you buy. I wouldn't buy from AG(they'll have your trousers down) be cheaper on eBay. Just take note of what colour dot they are as this reflects lie of club(black is standard). Tbf tho all the main manufacturers have a good GI range.

I personally regret not giving MD a try when I was getting my first set of irons. Tried all the big names and walked out with Callaways but didn't even take a second look at the lower price MD's. Have since tried some of the MD irons and they were great. Could have saved myself a few hundred quid and still had a decent club in my bag.

But he won't be able to hit any clubs on eBay. The second hand stuff they stock (certainly near me) have been reasonably priced and its worth walking in to at least have a hit with whatever you choose, surely? Nobody has to buy anything from anywhere if they don't want.

Nothing stopping anyone using and abusing them to then go and buy the selected model on the web.

I would stay well clear of American Golf as a new player, thats from personal experience.

When you know a little more and start to have a reliable swing then their ok, but from my experience they will sell you whatever they need to shift stock on for a beginner.

Couldn't agree more.
Definitely worth checking out MD clubs. Good price & get excellent reviews.

That wasn't my experience.
When it came down to two sets they recommended the cheaper of the two.
(Maybe he took pity on seeing my swing back then.)

Hi Steve,

as mentioned previously on the thread I would recommend the Cobra S3 max irons, I bought a set of these 12 months a go & haven't looked back, very forgiving & easy to get the ball in the air !!! :)

Hello and welcome, enjoy the highs and lows and youll be hooked in no time, be warned .......

Just starting out my first recommendadtion is find a local pro who runs group begginer lessons to start with get a good idea of basics from the start will help you no end in the long run, from there you can choose your own route but at least you have a solid basic starting point.
also he will be able to advise on clubs that he thinks will suit you indiviually, ther have been some great suggestions already and dont be afraid to get clubs 2/3 models old or second hand as they will be vastly reduced.
Good luck.

if you can find a set of Yonex VMS clubs I'd recommend those....I just sold my set on ebay (17 months old) for £77. I bought them brand new from AG and they took me from a 28 handicap to 21 in less than 8 months. Very forgiving but also allow you to play a little.

I think bashing the high street shops is a bit harsh, it really depends on the staff in each shop. My two local retail shops both heave very good pros in, that's dg in reading and AG in newbury. I would not hesitate on sending a beginner to either of them. Ok some of these shops have got a bad rep from poor sales people pushing incorrect (high margin or on a competition) products, but its down to your personal judgement of the fitter. Go into one and have a try, don't buy on your first visit though may be sensible, go back in a few days and try the clubs again.

Or as the guys have said, try your local club, you don't have to be a member. Local driving range often has demo days if you pick a particular manufacturer you like. My local one has the taylormade truck there tomorrow for example.

Don't discount 2nd hand! But try before you buy is a must! Your local range or pro shop may be best for this, although my local AG has a decent used section...

I've just got a set of Wilson DI11 irons and im very happy with them. Very forgiving for beginners like me but I don't feel that I'll want to be replacing them any time soon as I improve. The best bit was AG messed up the price match and took £40 too much off them :D

Hi mate, I only started laying last year an got myself some Wilson FSX fat shafts first but didnt enjoy playing with them so changed to The 2012 Nike VRS cavity back irons. They are forgiving and help you get the ball high. My brother in law who is at the same level recently got some RocketBladez irons and they seem even more forgiving than my irons.

Good luck though :)
