Just starting out

If you want my honest opinion neither set are any good. My advice would be to get a decent set of cavity back irons from someone like MD golf. I'd go for 4-pw and then look for a good hybrid instead of a 3 iron and get a 3 maybe a 5 wood and leave the drive altogether. Find a decent putter and you have a set that will last a while until you get into golf fully. These complete sets tend to be made of cheaper materials and don't actually offer a new golfer that much assistance

Homer, you may be down on your game, but your sagacious thoughts are spot on.

It did cross my mind if it might be a poster from the web-site.

shop around online and hunt pro shops i mangaged to pick up for a work friend a set of callway x12s,a nike sasquatch driver and callway heavenwood and a titleist stand bag for 180 hunting 2nd hand something like that would last as long as you wanted them

With that many to look at i've got a headache just looking and it don't make it any better not knowing what to look for in regards to quality and value but i'll get there. :)

Bacon,

I know people will disagree with me but personally i'd buy a cheap set like the ones you have shown and see how you get on with the game and if you wish to continue then buy a better set a year or so down the line.

I bet loads of people buy a £300-£500 load of gear then play for no longer than a month.

Anyway good luck with whatever you choose and welcome to the forum.

Hi Bacon,

I have just joined the forum and have the following advice to offer, having just restarted playing golf after a five year break and needing a new set of clubs. I had a look at MD Golf and their clubs are pretty good value for the money. I also went to my local pro shop and had a look at the seconhand and ex demo clubs he had for sale, and having the range on site I was able to try many brands and price ranges. I did eventually settle for the Titleist 755's for £250.00 these were Ex-Demos full frice is around £550.00, so definately worth popping into your local pro shop and asking.

I'm with Minty.

Buy a cheap set if you're trying out the game. If necessary, buy a cheap second hand set out of the free ads. Get used to hitting the ball with the full set (maybe leave the driver till you get better)

If you find the game's not for you, small investment wasted, knock 'em back out in the free ads. If like me, you get the golf bug and you find you've improved or feel the need to invest in better clubs (guaranteed if you get on with the game!) Then go out and buy yourself a good set.

as a general rule I never trust a web site that can't spell the name or details of the product they're selling properly.

I started with package sets - but that was before I found the forum! The first was really cheap - the head broke off the 7-iron after a couple of months. Fortunately I got them from American Golf so got a full refund.

The second were more expensive - Ben Sayers - the irons were OK, the putter pretty much a nothing mallet - too light; the hybrids were also a bit light for my taste. The woods started off Ok while I had a slow swing but as it developed I found I was outswinging them - far too much flex and twist, good recipe for massive slice.

This is, I think, generally true of most package sets; the irons will be OK but the whole set is made from cheaper materials. That is not to say that you can't start with something like these but be aware that as in everything else - you get what you pay for and if you continue you will be paying twice because you will have to replace them.

Hi Bacon
| would suggest a good second hand set but if you're looking at the packages have a look in Argos they seem to have some good deals and recognised brands for the sort of money you're looking at spending

Contrary to the opinion of most, I quite liked my starter set and would recommend it as an option. I bought a set of Hippo OSIV and the quality was pretty good. Came with 5i-SW, a 4i hybrid, a 3 wood, a reasonable putter and a driver with a sensible 11.5 degree loft. The stand bag was OK and all of it was a fetching lime green colour.

They are certainly worth a look.

I bought a set last year, £200, and it was awful. Already replaced driver (another £150) a wedge (another £70) and now need to replace the woods and putter asap. The irons are OK but want to replace them sooner rather than later.

i was in the same boat as you

i decided to go to my local pro shop and see what second hand sets he had

i bought a brand new set of mizunos mx19s for £215 and love them

i would stay dont be tempted by ebay as there are loads of fakes and dont get pne of the package sets...much better off in the long run by going to a pro shop and getting a good deal form there

I have found a set of top flite tour irons full set with bag from the argos clearancebargains shop 5 mins from work for £120 should have been £269,So i shall give these a go.
Thanks to all who replyed on here it was a greet help.

Bacon,

I would go for that deal mate.

I bought a set of memphis clubs, lasted me 16 months, i still have the 5wood in my bag and my mate bought the rest of the clubs from me and has used them with no problems through the summer.

What ever u go for, good luck! you'll need it in this rotten game that we all love!

Bacon.

Good luck mate, this can be the most enjoyable and frustrating game ever.

Just beware though. I bought a 'cheap' set of irons, the MX19s, and have since added driver, rescue's, additional wedges, new bag (one carry & one cart), waterproofs, more balls than I care to admit too, umbrella, waterproof socks, a couple of hats, trousers, tee shirts, gloves, shoes, pull trolley, and my latest aquisition an electric trolley. All in all probably about £2ks worth!!

The Mrs thought that all I'd spent was about £500.

And the above doesn't include green fees and membership fees!

The good news is that you don't have to do it this way. Go for a combined set and see how you get on. I know many people that started off with a cheap beginners set, myself included, and actually still use them some years later as they only play a few times a year.

I just like to know that it's me that's the dofoss on the the end of the club causing the problems and not the kit. :D

Seen as though you got the clubs and you certainly don't need any more advise i'll say welcome and enjoy the game!!! Don't take no crap from the missus either! you need your own space to dude.
