Sat at my desk and the phone buzzes email "you renewal confirmation" from Hastings Direct, Think to myself "wonder how much that going to be this year?"

Answer........

£2400!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't dial the phone number quick enough!

The guy I spoke laughed with me when I said I wanted to cancel and I won't need to tell you the reason! He said he couldn't understand what was going on but he re-ran the quote and it kept coming up the same so he apologised and wished me well and cancelled everything never suggesting once I stay with them!

Straight on to ComparetheMeerkat.com got several quotes for less than a sixth of that!

We've just moved all the cars to Kwik-Save as they were not only far cheaper than our previous insurers who all put their prices up this years renewal, but they also offered far more cover and better services (legal, windscreen, less excess, replacement vehicle & more).

Can't understand some companies that are prepared to lose long-term customers in search of new customers at massive costs to themselves? I always concentrated on retention first in my business before looking for new business.

Ouch! What do you drive?!

I'm waiting for Churchill to get back to me as refuse to pay to call them - I hate that and so prevalent these days. Changing my car from the practical to the sporty again as so missed my MX5 this past few years :-)

Are you ready for this?

It's a Peugeot 406 (and a diesel one at that) I know I'm a fully fledged member of the boy racing circuit, 6 years no claims with the same insurance company and the computer's spat that kind of renewal at me, at first I though the monthly DD was the annual premium!

They probably know you've got the MP 4's in the boot.. Instant renewal hike..:D

In all seriousness now though, I make a point of switching insurance providers every year. Once they send me a quote, I take that as gospel. The last insurer I used (LV) sent me a renewal quote of just over £300. When I got a new provider to quote for less than £220 I rang them to cancel.. Quick as a shot "Oh, we can do it for that..." Not a chance mate. You sent me a quote and now you're saying you can do it for less... Sweet FA of a chance....

There is absolutely no loyalty from the insurance companies anymore. They rely on you being too lazy to change...

They got your date of birth wrong and think that you are 18.

Either that or instead of clicking accountant to a professional services company I clicked "Accountant to The Corleone family business"

Ouch!! more than the car is worth is it not?

More than double the value of the car!

To be fair that was a fault of mine, the premiums weren't going up previous to this so I just let it rumble on!

I remember my dealings with Direct Line.

To be fair they had been excellent in the past. Then someone went into the side of me at a roundabout and I needed to make a claim. It was all admitted, the other person's insurance paid up in full and everything was fine until I realised that the company that Direct Line sent my car to for repair had not done the full job. It transpired that the rear axel had bent and this had not been picked up or simply been ignored. I only found out because it was causing the wheel bearings to fail. After months of complaints etc it was all finally fixed. Bearing in mind that this was a no fault claim etc I was then surprised to see that my insurance quote more than doubled the next year. Still think that this was because Direct Line had to pay up for the second set of repairs as they had already settled the original claim.

First rule of Business...Make sure your customer returns.
Unless you are an Insurance co.

I have my patter down to a fine tune now.
I say that you have quoted me a silly number, do we have to go all round the houses for you to offer me a price that will retain my business or do I put my phone down now.
Couple of minutes maximum usually leaves me with last years price or a small increase.

Got hold of churchill on a 0800 number I found! So normally an admin fee of £15 to change vehicle but they'll waive that for me. "Great" says I whilst wondering why they were sweetening me up and how much extra for the change of vehicle...waiting..."that will be £1.06 to change so shall we charge your credit card"? Go figure!!

Result though :-)

Not necessarily, my daughter, who is 17, is learning to drive and me and HiD found a nice 10 year old Renault Clio 1.2 petrol, so phoned up for quotes and best we found was £600 fully comp in her own name.

Daughters definitely cheaper. Though my daughter is £1200 (I think and fear) as named driver on my 08 Polo 1.2 petrol - so your £600 is def good. Haven't bothered asking what my 21 yr old son would be.

Was the quote as a newly passed driver or a learner?
Learners are cheaper to insure, as they are supposed to have a more experienced driver in the car with them…..how that makes them less of a hazard I've no idea.

Because once they've passed their Test they're let loose on their own....

And they're not "supposed" to have a more experienced driver in the car - the HAVE to have someone who is at least 21 AND has held a Full Licence for at least 3 years accompanying them.

We are with Admiral Multi car, 3 Vehicles, Kia Ceed Sportswagon, Clio and Peugeot 205 4 drivers. Me & Mrs Fragger on all cars and full driver daughter 19. and learner driver daughter 18 both on the 205

Total premium £1400 and we all have individual no claims , not bad compared to some of the horror stories out there.
