I was wondering if any of the members on this site have ever played at Q School for say the EuroPro or Alps Tour?

I know you have to be pretty damn good (understatement alert!) but was just curious if anyone had any experience of playing in any of those Q Schools and if they did how they found it etc?

Was just having a browse through your golf blog - quite the challenge you've set yourself.

I know a few lads that have played in the EuroPro events but none that have done it as there sole source of income. What I would say is that if you are really considering a full time career in the playing side of Golf, I'd have a look at doing the PGA degree when you get down to 4 or below. It looks like it would give you some decent transferable skills across the whole golf industry, should you fall short on the playing front.

Best of luck

Thats great! Thanks for the advice and for having a look at my blog :)

It is a fair old challenge and I may not succeed but I always perform better if I have a goal to aim for, something to spur me on and to make me go that extra mile rather than just doing it for the fun of it.

So hopefully having this goal and the blog will help my game and maybe even help me connect with other golfers etc.

Good luck with your game! I see your handicap is a nice low number and going downwards!

wow thats a real challenge you have set.. i am never going to get near a euro tour etc, but just followed you on twitter and am keen to see your progress! can we take side bets on your progress?

Interesting goal but over 6.5 years! I think you'll know pretty quickly if it's at all feasible. Good luck

Got a new assistant at my place who was on the Europro tour. He was doing ok but has decided to take a couple of years out to get his PGA qualification so he has something to fall back on if his efforts to be a touring pro fails. Have you played with many golfers that handicap is scratch and better? I have and when you see the standard that they are, it looks fantastic. But compare them to a tour pro and it is a hole new level of ability. Good luck with the challenge.

Rooter - Thanks! Ive just tweeted you :) The link on my site was wrong, it was linked to my personal twitter account (random ramblings by me) rather than the one Im going to use for the golf updates. All fixed now. Side bets?? Im listening hah.

DarthVega - Thanks. 6 and a half years is a long way off and if I can rack up my 5,000 before that then I will revise the end date :)

19th hole - Thanks for the support :)

MadAdey - I havent, to be honest Ive never played with anyone much better than me and I dont even have a handicap. Thanks for the good luck!

I should also mention that the aim of the blog through the 'Articles' page will also be to review courses, prices etc as golf can be a pricey sport and being from a working class background like I am, I want to try and show people that you can play golf on a small budget and where the cheapest courses and driving ranges are etc

With regards to the OP part of it, Europro and Alps tour will be no mean feat. Friend of my brothers who he also played for county with as a junior turned pro off a handicap of +3 and qualified for Europro tour at his first attempt and then just about made enough money each year to not have to requalify. After the 3rd year he went back to playing just a bit of pro golf now and again but got lucky and was offered the chance to work for Europro as a golfing director due to his background, but now works for Matchroom sport as a commentator and plays the odd event. Managed to go for a round with him and my brother last year, what a mistake that was talk about playing with the big boys I was left feeling inadequate!

Have to admit I wish i'd taken this game up as a kid like my brother did so I could have done something in the sport whereas I only started 2 years ago but wish you luck and now following you on twitter, to follow your progess it should be fun for you.

Only started 2 years ago and your handicap is 8! That is some very good progress! Hopefully Im at that standard in 2 years from now and then I have 4 and a half years to get on the Tour from there! I havent played a round of golf for 2 years, my best ever score was 105 on a full sized 18 hole course so I have some improving to do for sure!

Thanks for the support too :)

The internet it littered with blogs like this, most give up pretty sharpish, ide be surprised if you're still going in 6 months

Thats fair enough :)

Golf has always been a passion of mine but in the past Ive rarely had the money to play (hence why all my equipment is pretty old) but now for the first time in my life I have the time (just about) and money to be able to join a golf club and dedicate the time to playing and learning the game. Its long been a dream to become professional sports person but only now can I really try and have a go.

Perhaps if I had quit my job to do it, Id be even more driven as I have more to lose by not succeeding, but I want to keep my job to prove to people that you can improve and become pro even if you are in a full time job while you practice. You dont have to be a boy wonder golf player who has been destined to turn pro since he was 16. Wether I succeed or not....time will tell.

This is the assistant at my place that I mentioned. http://europro.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/europro12/profile/akeogh/tresults.htm Amazing to watch him when he is practising his short game and boy can he hit it long and straight.

Cor - tough old game. Look at that early season tournament - Mar Hall Classic. 54 hole tournament, he made 2 71s, but missed the cut. And that's "only" Europro. 2 shots- the difference between £10k and £3k, at a level where that really matters. It's a million mile away from the standard most of us achieve I suspect.

Thats an interesting read, hes definitely had some good results on the tour!

Just looking at that MarHall tournament. The winner shot a 65 in the second round. Probably a stupid question but...where is the difference between him and a major tournament pro? Is it that these courses are easier or shorter? Or are the flags more accessible? Like...would he be able to shoot that same score at say Augusta given the chance?

No is the answer to your question but having just read your blog and posts in this thread, I notice the distinct lack of what I would consider to be the most important part of a challenge like this - LESSONS. If you are going to get anywhere near Cat1, you need a good foundation, I'd be amazed if you got anywhere near the Europro tour without them at least to start with.

Also, have you looked at the order of merit for the Europro tour from last year and how much the winner made (before expenses)? I wish you luck I really do but I hope you have some good backing.
