Swung by the club tonight to check if my handicap had been printed up yet. Which it had..... bloody 14. The rounds I'd put in where all over 24+. Talking to the club handicap sec. he said if I cut out the blobs I'd be a single figure player... all three cards I birdied Si 1.

Can finally join in on the club comps now, looking forward to the first round of the club champ on sat now. Onwards and upwards eh!

Nice. But if you were 24+ on those cards, you've had your blobs cut down to doubles anyway.
Be happy. 14 is a good h'cap.

Seems like he's been harsh but I still reckon it takes six months from your first issued handicap to actually get to a true handicap

Or, you could play in endless games and discover none of them were qualifying and go nowhere in a year. My handicap still isn't "true".....

Was that a pinch of sarcasm young dave

Indeed it was. I made the enquiry as to why my h'cap never moved (up) and was told to play in more "white tee comps". My argument was that if I hadn't played to 12 off yellow then I shouldn't be off 12 anyway. It was pointless trying to make it stick.

LOL, I was told by the club sec that I don't get a cut for shooting 67 last week as my recent medal form hasn't been good :D

Well at least I tried :D

I don't blame you. Did you show him your card?

Virtually every comp at our club is qualifying. Even Vets Medal, Stableford, and Bogie comps whether off the yellows or whites.
I think I an safely say that every course I've played has a SSS for whites, yellows, reds, etc. so, as far as can see, there is no reason not to make all comps qualifying.

This is my point a handicap how ever harsh should level itself once playing in enough comps

I wish everyone had that opinion.

We have no qualifiers through the winter because (according to the committee) they're played off yellows. It's still a measured course, has its own sss (70 vs 72 off the whites), and we're always on proper tees and greens.

First time I realised they weren't qualifying was when I had a 75 and wondered why I hadn't had a nice cut

As a junior all our monthly medals were valid even if a couple of the par 3 holes where off matts, their view was distance saved per hole in cancelled by playing off crap matts instead of grass tee ares

If you only had trouble on one or two holes then 14 isn't unreasonable and is only the same as blowing out in a medal round anyway and that on average you are playing to 14. There are two ways of looking at it. Positively and relishing the challenge of trying to cut out the bad holes and play to it. Alternatively you could be negative and decide its too low, go out with a poor attitude everytime and feel proper fed up when you've used all your shots by the 11th.

They know you're rubbish as well then...

Can I sponsor (bribe) you to talk to our secretary?

There are players at mine who can't play every week and when they do, they play on Sunday. Some of these have inactive h'caps. The course has a SSS for all tees, why "inactivate" someone's h'cap when another member has marked a card for them in 12+ "comps" in a year.

Sounds like a bit of a jobsworth to me

At Sundridge, those who are unable to play in enough qualifiers can submit signed cards with the only proviso that they register their intention to "put a card in for h/cap purposes" in the pro shop before the round.
