We have a high tech piece of kit in my uni which simulates the golf shot and what not, kind of like a graphical flight simulator for golf, im sure you have seen them/herd of em. Anyway decided to book a lesson with the resident pro who suggested that with my new clubs and what not we would have a look at my yardages on this so that i would have a better idea on how far im hitting each club. So off i go working through my clubs and everything seems to be what i expected then he comes up with the following suggestion..

"the distance i hit my 3 iron, he would expect my driver to go 30 yards further!?" I was like, r u having a laff? I thought i was striping the driver and 3 wood and more than happy as it wasnt short at all but he said something was going strangely wrong the higher up the clubs.

Im not going to post my yardages because i dont want it to become a PI$$ing contest however im just wondering if you might know what he was on about? for instance do you have to hit your driver like 100 yards past your 3 iron cos that seems quite far fetched to me

How far we hit each club is different for everyone on here, but I would reckon to hit at least 40 yards more with a driver than a 3 iron. It is where it goes that really becomes the most important thing!

Carry?

Entirely possible I would say....180 3 iron and a 210 driver.

Q the cock waving contest that is about to commence....

I've just hit a Pro V1 with my 3 iron from my garden. Dodger, let me know when it lands in your garden...

How will you know it's mine? It's got Long Schlong written on it. :o

Back to the op, since you hit down on a 3i, and up at a driver, there could be something wrong with your driving. If you hit slightly down on it, you will get that bit more spin, which will bring it up short. You need to hit down on a 3i to get it off the ground.
He could be right. You would still think you were 'striping' it, but the spin could be all wrong.

I think the OP meant he should be hitting hiis driver 30 longer than he was, not 30 longer than his 3 iron. Hence the reference to the 100 yard difference between 3 iron and driver.

My answer still stands though. If you hit your driver like your 3i, then you won't max out the distance from it. The driver and 3w would be more affected by a downwards strike, the irons less so. If you then hit the driver correctly, the 'lost' distance would be found.

yer, he basically said i had 30 yards go missing with my driver. I cnt see it personally. My driver isnt fitted like my irons cos thats the next thing on my agenda but i still hit it decent, or at least i thought i did. I wouldnt say i hit down on it, i personally try and sweep it away and think if anything the lost of distance can only be cos i hit it too high. im gunna post my swing soon so maybe you guys could possibly diagnose it for me.

I always thought I hit it on the up, but the stats don't lie, I don't.

You probably still hit it out there, but you just could be longer, that's all.

A c/f driver will max out your distance for what you have, and they can adjust stuff to cover any swing faults. For me, going to an 8.5 loft minimised the spin from my downward strike, but made it a bit unforgiving if I wasn't playing well.

I dont think my spin rate was as low as it could be. I dont really understand it fully but i think it was up in the 4000's (i could just be imagining that so bear with me). A tour stiff shaft brought things a bit better for me when i tried one a while ago and i even thought about shortening my driver an inch cos im only 5"11.

Did the simulator tell you your angle of attack?

I also thing 4k rpm is too high, but like you said that's probably the shaft.

In answer to your original question, I'd say my driver was 40-50yds more carry than my 3i.

I dont want to get into posting yardages and how far i hit them but at current there is a 60 yard carry gap between by 3iron and driver. He felt i still had 30 yards to give and couldnt understand why i wasnt hitting it that far

im just wondering if you might know what he was on about?

So let me get this straight. You went to see your pro with his fancy launch monitor and your asking us what he meant :D I think you might have missed a trick there :D

I can see why you're asking for views as it does seem a bit ambitious to suggest you should carry your driver 90 yards further than your 3 iron. Others have suggested 40-50 yds and I would say that was about right for me too (although I have never measured carry as such that would sort of fit with my overall distances when fairways aren't running too much - I'm not a long hitter, probably about average). 60 yrds difference doesn't seem too bad at all.

If he reckons you should be getting an extra 30 yrds with your driver ask him how, is it a fitting issue or technique or both? As suggested above there may be some extra yards to be gained with a different club set up.

Were you downwind in a gale at a links course? That is the only time i have been near 90 yards difference in distance, let alone carry distance.
Normal still conditions carry distance i.e. not too hot or cold and little wind
3 iron - between 190 and 205
Driver - between 245 and 260 maybe a little bit more on a good day.

I think 50 to 60 yards difference is probably average

I think you are worrying about it way too much. By your own definition you felt like you were striping the driver and 3 wood and so be happy you can hit both reasonably long and straight. If you are going to get mega technical with the fancy monitor apart from spin, you need to look as smash factor, angle of flight, swing speed etc. THere are so many variable that without you giving ay sort of indicators we can only give you speculation. What I would be interested to see is what happened if your got on the Trackman monitor off grass rather than hiting in a bay. Then you'd get a much more accurate picture about impact (mats tend to be forgiving) and distance.
