I had great pleasure in escorting 3 juniors today in the Kenilworth Junior Masters.

I had 1 lad namely Harry Lord aged 12 from Rossendale who I'd escorted last year and was also a winner when off 23 but today he was off 14 so he has obviously had a good 2013 season coming down 9 shots. I also had a local lad namely Rocco Luca also aged 12 from Coventry (Finham) who was off 15 and my 3rd junior was a young girl called Ffion Tynan aged 11 who was playing off 8  Ffion lives in Wales but plays out of Minchinhampton Golf Club.

We were off the yellows except for Ffion obviously and some of the blocks were set right back almost encroaching on the whites on some tee boxes so the course was playing quite long but we went round in 3.5hrs due to the quality of golf on display. I think the fast greens caught them all out today or we would have had a few more birdies and pars but tee to green was a pleasure to watch.

The attitude of these juniors was excellent, especially if they hit a poor shot, it was just a shrug of the shoulders, walked up to the ball and hit it again and were still putting for par! I think Ffion went in about 5 bunkers and not only came out 1st time on them all, but sand saved 90% of them

I came across a Tweet later from Ffion announcing that she had won Best Girl (gross), which was thoroughly deserved. That's 2 years on the run I've had a winner in my group  In that tweet there was a link to her own website and what a prospect we have in this young junior golfer, I think I may have just escorted the next Charley Hull.

The overall winner and Junior Masters today was 13yr old Luke Bartram also from Rossendale Golf Club who shot an amazing 73, 3 over gross :whoo:

Here is Ffion's website, you heard her name here first, I'm positive we'll hear it again in the not too distant future.

Well done Fish, always nice to see golfers giving something back to the game.

Out of interest did the club allow parents to caddy?

No, the parents that want to follow have to be 50m behind or in front, although I was a little relaxed with that as long as they didn't interact in any way or be that close it put them off. In 2yrs I've never had to say anything to a parent so they respect the ruling.

Well done fish - my 10 year old played this year and last year and it is a great competition made special by the volunteer chaperones.

You missed one other heart warming story on the day. The young lad who is 9 years old and won the net competition with 50 (yes 50) points playing off an age maximum handicap of 44 (even though he is officially 50 handicap) is really getting into golf after recovering from leukemia a couple of years ago. He is a lovely lad, really brave, from a nice family and he already beats his Dad who is a fairly novice golfer - it's great to see him not only back on his feet but shooting the lights out !

Thank you for mentioning this as I wasn't aware of it as I couldn't stay until the end to hear the presentations. Even though I left the club recently I will continue to volunteer to escort the juniors at this event as it not only gives something back but to see the golf played and attitudes on display of these little people, we as adults could all learn something from them.
