While golfing with my clubs new junior convener he asked me about joining the junior committee,as he was looking for help as he'd never done it before and didn't no where to start,he's a Cat1 golfer who has coaching badges so they've got someone who knows about the game.

Has anyone ever done this before if so any advise on what to expect.

Indeed I have some idea about this topic. Unfortunately I had to step aside 2 years ago, but I'm back now. Only thing being the guy who is running our juniors atm is usless. Last year our highest handicapper in our 7 man team was 5. They should of walked the Fred Daly. Nope, didnt even make the 3rd round.
Anyway, you mate seems to be doing the right thing, getting others to help him. It dosent matter now adays what size your junior section is, you need all this child protection rubbish. I'm going Tuesday night for 3 hours for some training. IMO it would take atleast 4/5 adults to all be singing out of the same hymn sheets to run it right.
I'm on to our Vice Captain about getting thigs sorted for next year, he knows the score(ex teacher)
Can I ask what your club's thoughts towards your junior section is, coaching, playing rights and genral membership?
I think any club who wants juniors to become adult members have to be willing to invest in them at an early age.

With a pocket of sweets and a cheeky smile,

Steve K is a blankety blank!

Not sure of the clubs stance on juniors to be honest CC, but last year our pro ran a series of lessons which he split into groups of different ability, but the greedy get charged us for them.

Playing rights when they get to a certain age ,handicap they can play in adult comps and don't seem to bother about the junior ones,he checked Howdidido and the biggest field was 10 out of 75 juniors.

For the good of the club it must improve and getting kids more involved is the way forward as they have about 6 or 7 Cat1 golfers and 1 currently in the USA on a scholarship.

He has 3 or 4 already ,2 of them women but wanted someone he knew to help him,my youngest is in his 2nd year of being there and enjoys it but his football is more important,it trying to keep them interested thats the problem.

I dont expect the pro's to teach them for free. But from time to time, give a little back.
Encouragement from the club council is a big issue, to many old gezzzers can't see juniors in their way.
I will stick up for any junior, but I will not lie for them, my guys know that.
These kids are going through what we as juniors went through. Only in todays game much more is known.
Would you rather they were in towns shoplifting, mugging old ladies or doing drugs?
Golf is a great outlet for the kids, so everyone needs to help support them.
Roll on next July when my wee team will form again and have another got at the laegue.

Not sure how thriving our section is or isn't. Apathy and I admit it. However I do think juniors today get a better ride than we did. At my first club we could only sit in the snooker room (you can imagine how smoke filled that was and how much talking we were allowed to do when a game was going on) in the locker room amongst other golfers getting changed or if the weather was dry we could go outside. Hardly liberated thinking but juniors weren't actively encouraged.

At least now there are development schemes (Wee Wonders etc) to get kids into golf in the first place and clubs have become more enlightened. I will talk to any junior I see on the practice ground, putting green or out on the course and encourage others to do the same. It can be quite intimidating especially for the younger ones (who all do a great job at being aware of others coming up behind and letting them through). I know there were some problems with the guy running the juniors having a fit of pique a few years back and I don't know the outcome as to whether we have anyone looking after them. I know the club does give them their own competitions in the school holidays and they have a section on the honours board which is a nice touch

Its a pleasure as always. I'm sure he brought you on board as a style guru anyway, help the young lads to dress to impress, dress as a winner, think as a winner! :D

Well it ain't for my golfing ability thats for sure :D :D,think i might give it a go depending on the clubs stance as its a bloody Gin palace at times.

i taught yougsters at the `salga` in st.andrews for 12weks - u may have to get background checks done -when ur dealing with juniors etc - speak to ur sec first and confirm ... euan

You might know the Junior Convenor at my place Alan Morgan,i think you have to get the disclosure checks done anyway,am still thinking it over.
