Mr Spieth's is currently playing the John Deere in America instead of acclimatising to Links Golf and The Open atmosphere over here.
Good move or not?
Apparently, the JD gave him an invite when he was an Amateur and he broke through the ranks there as well.
Virtually all the bigger names are already here, either playing at Gullane or at others courses.
Loyalty is obviously to be admired but I fear this puts him at a disadvantage

Apparently playing St Andrews on a simulator. Hardly seems ideal practice and while I'm all for a degree of loyalty, I would have thought proper preparation for a unique challenge would have been a better choice

Admirable loyalty! Not sure how difficult the decision was, but, after his performance at Chambers Bay, the loyalty would rank higher in my book than a few more days prep on (different) links. Nothing can prepare you properly for an Old Course hoolie anyway, so the 2 days allocated should be sufficient!

Brits do tend to get a bit precious about The (British) Open!

Totally agree - people that matter have long memories; he recognises that and is doing the right thing which will inevitably translate into a more comfortable experience for him at the open anyway!

If he's playing on a simulator then he should win it, I've played some of my best golf on the Wii.

His is the Xbox bit easier to gf on than the Wi. ;)

He'll be on the charter plane they put on every year Sunday evening I guess.
Heard a rickie interview and he felt the need to come across and get used to time zone and cuisine  early but with the travelling these guys do regularly I'm not sure it will make that much difference.

I agree. The right thing to do supporting those that supported him when he needed it.

I think he's doing the right thing... he played well at the Ryder Cup so I don't see why he can't rock up and play well at St Andrews. I'm sure he knows the course somewhat and the weather conditions can vary so much you might as well just rely on your ability on the day.

I think his mental preparation will be better simply becasue he's playing in what he feels is the right comp to play in, regardless of the underlying reason

I think acclimatising to the links would have been the better choice for his game in the short term, but learning that he is keeping sponsors happy by playing the JDC makes me think he's done the right thing long term.

Look at Sergio Garcia, rocked up to the U.S. Open this year just before the event and didn't do too badly, finishing T18th.

However, being at even par and T101st after day 1 in Illinois isn't ideal for Jordan. If anyone has it in the bag to turn it around though, he does.

Although fulfilling his moral obligation, missing the cut and getting over to Scotland tomorrow night but be an unexpected but welcome compromise to his Open preparations :D

I think you could be on to something there. If he wins the Open, missing the cut on the JDC would blow away in the media wind.

I think all the top guys who don't come over and play the Scottish Open this week are missing a trick and not giving themselves the best possible preparation.

That said, life is all about compromise and I think he's doing the right thing. Good on him!

At the FJ day Westie said there's a lot more mdeia commitment at the Open than at other tournaments, even at the other majors. Something about there being so few big ones in the UK. I think Jordan is in for a lot of media regardless of what he does, with Rory out and the two in the bag already he's still going to be target number 1 next weekend.
