Hi all, I have decided to take the plunge and join my 1st private members golf club after my time as a nomadic golfer.

I have chosen Gillingham Golf Club which is about 5mins from me so an ideal location.

www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk

Have a look and tell me what you think. The course is quite tight, the clubhouse is magnificent and I think I will be happy there.

I have been proposed & seconded, the forms have gone in so after my interview shortly I should be a full member.

Am going through the same process at the moment. The sudden cut in income made me look around for a cheaper option and found that a local private club is offering 30% discounts for those 35 and under. This I can just about afford so have put in the application which is published on the notice board for a week for comment before interview and then, considering my skill level, I will have to have a round with the pro to check that I am not too much of an embarassment.

Good stuff, Jon.

Had a wee look at the website and it looks like very good value for the facilities. Will be great for you being so close.

Quite short course so you'll be hoping to get a decent handicap, I'm sure.

Looks good MWJ. I'm sure you will enjoy your time there. The best thing about a local club is that often you can just drop in for a few holes if you've got a spare hour or two.

I've never played the course so, once you have got your feet under the table.......

Noticed under the Not Permitted "Trousers visibly tucked into socks."

How are you to keep the trousers clean on a wet winter saturday?

Other than that it looks very nice, and so it should be with the annual subs that they are asking. All ther best when you get in there.

Should be good because it's a James Braid layout. It is quite amazing how many courses that man designed (my own home course included).

The clubhouse does look pretty good too. Good luck.

£840 thats alot of cash, you can get open qualifying courses up in Scotland for half that price.

Is that a whole golf course (lock, stock and barrel) for £420? Crikey, your own 18 hole q' course for less than a BMW service.

I'm moving......

Good on you Jon! I have been a member at my club for 2 years now. Best move I ever made. The ability to stroll over there and play a few holes can't be beaten.

Divot,

Rochester & Cobham Park which has been a qualifying course near me is an entrance fee of £1000 plus a £1211 per year subscription.

Chart Hills, which was used for the ladies open is £1000 joining fee and £1750 per year subscription.

There are several courses within 20 miles of me, the ridge, west malling, bearsted and wrotham heath, all of which are more expensive than the club I am joining.

Didn't spot the annual subs, actually, Jon. Just looked at the visitor's rate and thought it would be cheap.

£840 is more than twice what I've ever paid but given it's 5 minutes away, Jon, it'll probably work out at £0.01 per shot, so great value when you look at it that way.

Atticus will be on in a minute to remind us that Carnoustie is £300 a year.:D Ooh, those crazy Angusians! Is that a word?

Well done and congratulations to you MWJ ;)

You've just bought yourself a share of peace and quiet, a home from home, an escape and retreat all in one.

The price is very fair -even for the south east. When I was looking in Hertfordshire, out of 45 clubs, there were only a handful under £1000 a year and some of them were 9 tracks.

enjoy ;)
