Joining a Society in medway area

My friends and I have been thinking about joint a club for some friendly competition, although we like the thought of playing different courses.

So we are looking into societies what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
How do you find a society?
I don't have an official handicap I play at about 15+ although think playing with different people would help this.

Any thoughts and ideas.

Some good courses in that part of Kent, Sittingbourne is very nice and Redlibbetts was fun too, but loads to choose from. You can't get a proper competition handicap if you're nomadic golfers but if you want more than one game a week, I think joining a club is better. It works out cheaper than green fees and you get to meet a variety of players and there are usually lots of organised comps to play in.

Redlibbets used to (when I was a member there) do a credit based membership.

Not sure if they still do though.
