Hi all new to the forum, been playing golf for about 18 months now having lessons, and now wanting to join a club but a couple have turned me down because either I don't know anyone at that club or I have no handicap so won't let me join! How do I get a handicap without being a member of a club? Live in Preston was looking at leyland but played last week and not that impressed, Preston gc told me won't take because of the handicap. Anyone got any thoughts on how I go about this?

Just go back and clarify with them! £200 joining fee and £1030 a year is not bad but does fit the "premier" tag line from their website. No mention of a handicap limit on the membership page!

I can tell you I have joined a more expensive club with no handicap, I hardly even had a golf swing!

Amazed at this. Lots of people join clubs without a h/c and then put in three cards. How many inactive h/c are out there now? Staggering. I'm sure some help will appear soon.

I'm going to ring Preston again tomorrow and speak to the secretary see what they say, would be good to join Preston as 1min away walking and played a couple of times and seems a good course

You don't need a handicap to join a club, however some clubs can selective but that's another argument. Are there any municipal courses near you, they usually have a membership that you can join so should be easy to get your handicap. Will not cost you a fortune either.

To be honest it doesn't sound like the type of club I would want to join, if they turned me down for no handicap I certainly wouldn't be fighting them to hand over that kind of money!

Know lots of people who play at Preston, quite a few of which used it as their 1st club and joined just by getting in touch with the club direct (as in not having to be introduce by a current member).

Very surprised you're having issues with them, always seemed to be a very welcoming club whenever I've been. Definitely get in touch with the secretary, they should be able to sort things out for you.
