Johnson and Sunak both fined over lockdown parties

The reaction will be interesting. If Sunak resigns because of this, it makes Johnson's position untenable imo. (Note I am avoiding party politics here.)

Whether or not you agree with the fact that this party in the public domain went largely unnoticed at the time, key takeaway is this:

That No10 evidently did not believe that the birthday party was against the rules because they clearly briefed it to journalists from The Times.

And ultimately this is the strongest defence re: alleged ministerial code breaches. That Boris Johnson did not lie to the House because at the time he believed he was in the rules even if the Metropolitan police disagree now.

he did say in the HOC that there had been no parties and no law breaking in Number 10. He was talking about all the staff there, not just himself personally. Did he honestly believe that at the time? Only he knows.

Who knows, who cares ?

Plenty of people who missed seeing loved ones or who were fined for example for sitting in their car eating take away during lockdown

Whilst those who set the rules broke them

It's like fraud in office

Or if an MP broke anylaw .. when you set the laws you are expected to uphold and respect them

I know a few police officers who are told when they trained to report all crimes even those their friends commit no matter how minor.. prob in practice doesn't happen but if the police are told that should not those who set the laws respect them?

Have to say this stuff, annoys me.

One person in my family was forced to be locked down on their own by law.

Another at a young age was forced to move somewhere else and not see us by law.

and so on the stories goes on, some alot worse(deaths), some equal, some better, some people dont even feel they were affected.

Within me, the bitterness and anger goes deep and dont think it is something I will ever get rid of before I die. I have plenty of anger over all of it and seeing this or PH people saying we didnt lockdown hard enough, makes my blood boil.

With you. My wife missed her last Xmas with her nan (who she lived with for 10 years so extra close) because lockdown rules.

What boils my blood is if it was the other lot in power people who are defending them would be calling for them to resign.

Take the politics out of it. Whoever it is..resign.

I think we have all heard the old idiom that ignorance of the law is no defence. It should be rather unnecessary to say that ignorance of the law that you have written should definitely be no defence.
