I had the good fortune to spend the day at Gleneagles yesterday watching the golf.
Having set out from home on a fine sunny morning, it was something of a shock to find that the whole of Central Scotland was hidden under a blanket of thick fog. Play was suspended when I arrived at the course. So, in order to get my money's worth (I am a Scot after all, mind you my ticket was a freebie
) I headed to the practice range. It's an amazing place to stand and watch what players do as they warm up and work on their wee swing 'key movements'. What also amazed me was that virtually all of the players could hit the perfect shot when there was no pressure involved.
The hooter to resume play sounded so off I went onto the course to watch play. Rather than follow a group, I got myself into position at a hole and watched several groups play through those holes. You see how the pros manage their game so much better than we do as they all seem to know where they want the ball to be at any given time.
There were several good rounds out on the course, Migel Angel Jiminez played really well as did Eduuardo Molinari who played along side Jiminez, well enough for a wild card ? well...
Stephen Gallacher played well in the morning session, moving to a good position on the leaderboard. Young Shane Lowrey seemed to hit the ball further than I go my holidays and Vansick, the South American chap launched a few into a different timezone becausehe was so long. All the players hit the ball so hard these days.
All in all a good day out. Good to be able to wander at will and sit and take in the good golf on show. A late afternoon shower didn't do too much to dampen spirits as the rest of the day had actually been a scorcher after the early morning mist had gone.
The course looked good, the traffick management was good, public carparking was well signposted and the shuttle bus service was frequent. Hopefully Gleneagles will be able to put on a good show in 2014 when it hosts the Ryder cup
