hi all,

i'm looking for a little advise concerning spectating at this years Johnnie Walker Cup 2013 Gleneagles.

it will be my first live competition.

We are on holiday close by that week and the missus has just suggested we go on the Sunday :) (got a feeling i'm being set up for a shopping trip aswell! :()

so did any of you go last year?

I will be taking an 8 year old and the missus :smirk:

are there other things to occupy them?

would you just pay on the gate? its £22 for tickets which sounds good.

it would be great if I could get some previous experiences.

regards

Gary

Hi Gaz and welcome.

Entry and parking are fairly easy. Bus shuttle to/from the car park.
Lots of walking involved, especially holes 2-8.
Tented village, food, drink etc but not much to keep an 8 year old interested.
Sitting in grandstands can be either exciting or boring. Try to choose one that gives you views of more than one hole/green. If you go to the back row you generally have a choice, take binoculars if doing this.
I have only gone on comp.tickets but I would advise buying in advance as Sunday will be the busiest day and there could be queues.
Take rucksack with waterproofs drinks and snacks.
If the weather is nice it can be a beautiful spot.

Good vantage points around/behind the 10th and 17th greens. Both good par3s that throw up a few exciting moments. They are also only about 100yards apart ;)

The redesigned 9th green was also a good viewing place last year with a high bank to view from.

I don't like going over the road to holes 3-8 as it's not the best viewing parts of the course IMo. The 8th green approach is ok, but there are better.

All that land and they squeeze in six holes where there should be three. Looks like a cheapo option.
Very badly designed layout IMVHO.

I went last year on the Sunday, was a great day out. Didnt know what to expect at first as it was my first tournament. Defo go with a plan of either following a group or finding a spot and sitting down and seeing a few groups coming through. I did a bit of both, followed for the first 9 holes then picked a spot to sit for a bit.

Take food if you can as the food there is expensive, but there is plenty to eat if you do want to get some there.

I'm looking forward to it again this year, going on the Saturday for a change.

spend some time at the Academy- about 50 yds from the 1st Tee, you'll pick up the great rhythm and strikes the pro's have over us mere mortals, even the sound of the strikes will be different.
The back of the 16th Par 5 (large mound) is a great spot as you'll see attempts to get over the water and on the green in 2 (I've only done it once in all my years there).
Theres not too many bad areas to watch at the PGA due to the mounds. def take your own main food, the tented village is small but useful to kill 30 mins between beers if it's a warm day.
