John Jacobs RIP

Very sad to hear this news but feel so fortunate to have read his books and interviews to simply hear what the great man had to say.

His book and TV programme were vital to so many of my generation.

Had the good fortune to briefly meet him once and he did not disappoint, a real "old school" gentlemen.

May he rest in peace.

One tip of his from in a column he did back in the day in (I think) Golf World that has stuck with me was 'to hit the ball further you don't hit it harder - you hit it better' .

Golfing visionary, the Grandfather of the European Tour, and one of the most influential teachers of all time. A long life, well lived. RIP

I've got a nice letter from JJ that he sent to my Granddad many many years ago. Apparently my Granddad had one of his instruction videos (The Short Game) but had spotted a mistake (JJ had used the word square instead of open), so had written to Golf World about this. They forwarded the letter to John and he sent a nice letter back to my Granddad and apologised, as admitted that it had been a mistake on the video (he used the phrase "I am so pleased that apart from this one slip of the tongue, you find the tape most instructive") - nice of him to bother, as I wager most wouldn't but instead issue a small apology through the magazine.

My whole game is based on his teaching.

One of his friends was a local pro with us for a few years before moving back to England. Took me from 25 to 9 in two years of lessons here and there.. Refered to him on every lesson. Its a different world now with the likes of Rick Shields and David Leadbetter etc

Have his book practical Golf and a DVD box set of his teaching. For me anyone starting and looking to learn the game there is no better.

I hope some day my son will put his teaching into practice.

R.I.P

Edit: Nice tweet from Padraig Harrington

John Jacobs changed my whole golfing game in 1996 with the one line #open the door, close the door "early".I gained 20 yards and a big draw

In his book "Plane Truth", Jim Hardy makes reference to the great man. He states that whilst sitting down talking to John about different swings, it was John that coined the phrase "one plane".
Well thanks John, because your input to Jim certainly gave me that lightbulb moment when I read "Plane Truth", and is my golfing bible.

RIP
