. . or can a referee interfere with play?
bored and flipping channels last night and caught some golf on virgin cable! that was a surprise in itself.
it was about half-an-hour of a match played at Mission Hills, no idea when, and both men and women competing. I switched over in time to see Monty birdie the 17th to take the lead at -4, with Lorena Ochoa at -3 on 16.
Monty tees off on the 18th, at which point a referee comes over to tell him that he might be penalised for something that occurred earlier*. This of course lead to a discussion and a bit of delay before Monty went on to complete his play of the 18th - with two poor shots.
Couldn't the referee have waited until he had played 18 and told him before he signed the card? It was going to, and obviously did, adversely affect his play of the hole. The referee even said he wanted him to know before he played the hole!
* Monty's caddy had helped someone move a signboard, which was apparently a 'temporary immoveable object'. The board had been replaced before Monty played but still a penalty.
Ochoa birdied the 18th to, she thought, tie. As it was she won by 2 but would have won even if Monty had also birdied as he probably would otherwise done (he was playing quite well).
