Golf is a strange sport!

It is a club and ball sport like tennis, baseball, hockey etc but because of the design of the clubs, you don't really need to have feeling for the ball.

The ball in golf is dormant and players only require club control with the ball being simply in the way.

Their are four main shots required for golf, on average they can be broken down to... fairway/rough 44%; putting 40%; driver 14% and sand 2%.

This means that we have two clubs for 54% of the shots and may carry up to another 12 for the rest of the shots.

I personally have five clubs in addition to these two and can manage all yardages - within my personal limits - with them. (5 wood, 5 hybrid, 7, 9 and SW)

This enables me to...

1) Carry them in a small bag.

2) Have less club selection decisions to make on the course.

3) Endeavour in some creativity and shot making

4) Use touch and feel more often than just for putting and chipping.

AND

5) This all adds up to having more fun during the round.

Well there we are lads and lasses we now have a difinitive answer about how to play the game so now we know we have been spending money we don't need to, playing the game with too many clubs and don't need lessons any more.
All this from a newbie on his first post.

Welcome to the madhouse! :) :) :)

Jump in with both feet why don't you!!

I am guessing that you are being sarcastic, if not, you seem to think I am preaching something new here. BTW, where in my post did I mention that golfers don't need lessons?

By this you mean newbies should know their place on this board.

I think its an interesting angle.

Pros may have an argument for carrying 14 clubs, I believe amateurs would make a better job of the game with half of that.

Fair enough, can't say I agree but it's all about opinions. Welcome aboard.

Actually, I'd say with the skill the pro's have and their ability to hit different clubs different ardages they are the ones who could cope with less clubs better than amateurs.

Welcome on board fella, don't be shy. :)

Where do you stand on Rangers being in the SPL?

If the Barclays Premier League would accept Celtic into their set up, I say...

"Let the huns burn in hell!"

As the Scottish Premier needs them, I say...

" Put them in the third division anyway!"

Thanks glad we cleared that one up, onky joking fella, as it's caused a bit of a stir, in the OOb section.

Nice to see someone so forthright in a first post. Genuinely, welcome on board, tell us more about yourself, where do you play handicap etc,

We've got a live one here boys..........

Good point.

I like to put it another way. If amateurs cut down to half sets they would get to know how to play half and three quarter shots instead of trying to hit the perfect full swing in only two from ten swings.

I could only afford a half set of petron impala with my national savings certificates (most of you won't remember them) so didn't have any option to learn to play with them and manufacture shots. When I got the remainder it made it seem such an easy game as I had all the tools I needed. Well easy in terms of club selection. The problems began once I had it in my hands

You may not agree with Patrick, But how many of you have gone out for a quick knock with a Half set and played really well !!!!

I coach this game for my sins and often teach total beginner how to play the game. When I play with them, I only carry my 9 iron and can play around bogey golf with it. Our nine hole course is a 3,300 yds par 36 and fortunately has no carries of more than 130 yds. I tell them to play with 5 clubs until they get to 18 handicap and advise adding one more until they reach single figures and then they may add a seventh.

It's a fair point you make, you often hear th pro's say they only had one club as a kid and learnt to hit different shots with them. However, they all end up with 14, there must be a reason for that?
