Went to the practise ground yesterday for an hour as the day was so calm, and 2/3 of our guys were on already, having a bit of a laugh and a comp hitting Wedge into our rather mediocre green on the range.

One of the guys, who I have talked about before on here, is off Scratch, and was hitting his full wedge into the Pins with consumate ease, and were taking one bounce, and fizzing back a couple of feet every time and stopping dead.

Mind you, the same lad has twice in the last 2 weeks equalled the Amateur Course record at our course of ......wait for it.......63 !! Gross !!! (CSS is 69)
Thats a record HE holds anyway !!

Tis a different game.......

Always good to see how it should be done. How come this guy isn't off a better handicap than scratch. I'll make do with the very few times I hit my wedge perfectly and get a bit of zip on the green. Always good to see my mates reaction as I get one to spin 3 or 4 feet back (usually further from the hole )

Spent an hour on our par 3 course today just hitting wedges. One hole I hit 10 shots from 75 yards and they all finished within 10 feet of the hole - that's guaranteed to bugger up the short game tomorrow.

I hate all wedges!!! Never mind getting back spin, or hitting it to 10 feet. I rarely hit the green from 75 to 100 yards out, and if I have a clear run to the flag or a good part of the green, I'll hit a 6 iron half shot to about 15 to 20 feet.

A lot of guys can play their own course well, send them somewhere else with a tough css and they are average.
I dont know the guy so could always be wrong, I have seen a few guys great at home and crumble away and come in with really mediocre scores.

It's nice if you know it's going to happen.

I played in a society day a couple of weeks ago and the nearest the pin hole was about 120yds downhill with water directly in front of the green, and the pin about 12 feet on with the green sloping back to front.

I hit my wedge which landed pin-high about 15ft left (the pitchmark was about a foot inside the current best marker), took one hop forward landed on an upslope and spun back into the water. :(

The current best was in the group in front, who had waited on the next tee to see if anyone beat him.
I couldn't tell if the 'unlucky' was sincere for all the laughing!

Played with a +4 player in a 36 hole open once. That was an education. Two 65's and he was fuming! :D
