Just seen Bubba's tee shot on the 17th yesterday. Carved it way left into the hospitality suite.
He then gets a free drop, chips onto the green and holes the putt for a par.
It's time they started punishing really poor shots like that one with a penalty drop rather than a free one.
Or make them play it from someone's G&T......

Yes, it's interesting how often even the most wayward shots still end up with the pros having a shot to the green. 40 yards off line at most places I play and you're lucky to find it at all.

People always say that if you send a top pro off the back tees at their home club they would shoot -5 or better with ease.

But there are no hospitality tents!

To be fair to Bubba it was one heck of an up and down from that thick rough.

I do agree though its not ideal but corporate sponsors plough money into tournaments.

What about McDowell's shot at Dubai (?) that flew over the green hit the base of the hostility stand and rebounded 20 or 30 yards back onto the green near the hole. Should he have been penalised for outside assistance?

tend to agree that in bubba's case its a little ridiculous to get a free drop. in terms of outside assistance much harder to make an arguement, its been my experience that the vast majority of bounces/kicks are bad rather than good so very harsh to punish for the occasioanl good one.

seem to remember a couple of shots deliberatly hit of the wall on the road hole @ st andrews back into the green as there was little choice. love seeing that would hate similar events being prohibited

It's a difficult one this as who's to say he wouldn't have got up and down if the stand wasn't there? It was a bad shot yes but the grandstands aren't part of the golf course and players hit bad shots. While part of me agrees that it seems unfair, the players could argue that hitting it gives them a worse lie. What happens if it hits the stand and goes in the water, do they get a free drop?

No they just get a chance to blow and open championship and go paddling.

What else can organisers do when structures are put up on the golf course that affect how it plays? The drop zones and how they are maintained are usually reflective of where the pro may have ended up, sometimes it'll benefit them sometimes not; but at least it's teh same for everybody in that comp.

IMO the hosptality areas should be out of bounds.

Seen course recently (might have been dubai) where there was a par5 with water short and hospitality long.
Could see players were overclubbing to take water out of play knowing if they went as far as hospitality they would get free drop. Make it ob and only good drives will have a chance of going for it in 2 instead of everyone within 3 wood distance going for it!!

It's unfair to say that pros rely on hitting hospitality tents and stands to stop their ball. Very often they simply use the spectators.

I remember watching a tournament, I think it was the Dubai Desert Classic in 2010. On the 3rd day (..Again from memory) the flag was in a right awkward spot and the pro's were deliberatley hitting the ball through the green against the stands to get a free drop as it gave better position to get at the flag.

While I see why they do it, but, what would they do if it wasn't there?

Edit: I think me and JJ are thinking of the same tournament

the WOODS shot springs to mind from a few years ago, flew the green hit the club house roof rolled down and ended up in the car park in front of the club house, every commentator said it was out of bounds, but low and behold the good old yanks decided the car park in front of the club house was actually part of the course and as they couldn't move it he got a free drop at the side of the green, not saying they cheated but would a european player been given a free drop or was it because it was WOODS.

The one that gets me is the line of bloody site rule because of a dirty great scoreboard. I saw Garcia move from thick cabbage to an area that hade been walked on because of the scoreboard (can't remember where but last seasonm) and he gets a decent lie and makes par

Its not Bubbas fault, everyone plays to the rules of the game
What is at fault is why the tent is so so close.
If the tent was further away or if something else was possible to reallly punish those shots

the line of sight rule bugs me more than drops from grandstands or hospitality tents, although these cna be a problem if the clients are too beered up i read poults had toask for his ball back in Phoenix no one actually owned up but Rickie Fowler spotted someone dropping it on the floor!
