Joint press conference between the R&A and the USPGA supposedly tomorrow at 1.30pm (UK time), rumour currently seems to be that anchoring a putter will be banned from the start of 2016 (seems a long lead in time!)

I'm struggling to get worked up about this.
Now majors have been won with them it has stirred up the debate but they've been around for donkey's years. Banning them now seems stupid. But, major wins this year are 50:50 long versus short putter, so they're hardly ruling the world.

Personally I can't get on with the long putters and don't see myself ever using one, but I certainly don't feel at a disadvantage to those that do.

Best putter in the game at the moment? Luke Donald. Using a standard putter.
Ryder cup, outrageous display of putting brilliance to get back into it from Poults, then to beat Mickelson from Rose. Using standard putters.
The long putters don't appear to be offering any advantage, the best putters are all still using standard putters.

As has been said on other threads Steve. It's not the club that should be banned but the anchoring.

While I fully agree, I do wonder where it will leave players like Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley who don't know anything but, even Adam Scott hasn't used a short stick for a good while.

Should be interesting to hear what they have to say for sure.

They've long stated that any rule change wouldn't be until 2016 when the next edition of rules is due to be published.
I wouldn't mi d betting there's a phased banning of anchoring announced with effect from the. New season in the pro game and elite amateurs and years to come for regular amateurs.

They dont offer any advantage to good putters of the ball, they offer a more level playing field for yippy and generally bad putters.
No other sport offers a leveller like that. Imagine being given an alternative in other sports purely out of lack of ability. There would be uproar. The problem is now that because it has been allowed for a while, it takes a stern backbone to stop them.

I had a go on a belly putter a few weeks back, it was horrible. Each to their own. Shame that they let it get to the point of major winners before nipping it in the bud. Should have got on it early or just left it be. Bad form from both sides of the pond in that sense!

If they ban them at club level, how many members will give up their golf membership because they have the yips?

If 10 seven day members give up that will be £10K + at most clubs around here and we certainly don't need to keep losing members and revenue

Dont see the hooohaw about it , if the putter is legal , leave it alone , if the anchoring is illegal why havent they been disqualified for putting this way ??

so to sum it up currently the putter is Legal , the stroke is Legal .. wheres the beef ??.. oh so now that major has been won the purists dont like it ? ah shucks.... isnt it lucky for us golfers of today some people had the foresight to let the game expand & improve or we would be still using persimmon [sp] & the old butter knives ..

Like a perimeter weighted iron... Doesn't offer an advantage to good strikers of the ball, but offers a more level playing field for inconsistent ball strikers.

I'm firmly in the "Why?" camp on this one. It's been allowed, or at least tolerated, for decades.

Why are they banning it?
Why are they doing it now?
Why doesn't a belly putter win every week?
If they offer an advantage why isn't everyone using it?

i'm not a fan of the long / anchored putter, but i'm not convinced about the level of advantage it really confers. watching adam scott cough up the open with a missed tiddler made me doubt whether there really is a great advantage in using them...
