I played today and shot a steady 85 with some good and some bad points much like a normal round of golf. Nothing was great and nothing was terrible- I struck some great irons, yet duffed a few. I made some great pitch / chip shots but was inaccurate on occasions. It was just an average round of golf for me in all senses of the word (although my driving was better then it has been!). Except...

On the courses 4 par 3's I made par each time. Hitting the green and two putting on all four occasions. I have certainly never played with someone who had made par at every par 3 on a course in one round, not even low single figure handicappers. Then I thought I wasn't doing anything great or playing as well as I have done previously- certainly in the ball striking department- so quite a few people must have done this as well. Anybody else achieved the same? I'm not sure whether this is an 'achievement' or not. :D

That sounds like my game all over haha.

I normally do quite well on the Par 3's to be fair. Hit the green, Get it close, hole out...its that simple(if only) But it can be. I dont know for sure but I think I have probably made par at all the 3's a number of times on my track, there are 4 of them.

I find my best scores come from average rounds, ad I always look back and think I could of shot 5 shots lower had my irons been good not average or my putting great instead of steady.

I came close yesterday. Off the whites I birdied the first, parred the 6th (chip and putt) parred the 8th (chip and putt) bogied 11, parred 13 (chip and putt) and bogied 17 to finish +1 for the par 3's.

I started off really well and managed to play the front 9 in two over. Then got stuck behind a womens 4 ball in a match and despite being the only other player on the back nine they wouldn't let me through. I lost all my rhythm and got so frustrated. I dropped loads of stupid shots and ended up 10 over on the back nine for a total of +12 (still 38 points but the potential was there for so much lower).

Depends on the course. At mine, no....
But I have at a few courses....

My first "proper" golf club had 4 par 3s. I frequently hit 3/4 but rarely the 248 yard 6th....

Either way, it's a good effort, well done. Can't be struggling too much with those irons :)

good point I suppose what course you play on will impact this a lot. I would say that they are a tricky set of par 3s though so I am quite happy. I certainly wouldn't fancy my chances of repeating the feat on your track. 248 yards par 3? I'd need a solid driver for that one! The longest on the course I played today is 212 downhill which plays as a full 4 hybrid for me.

As for the irons I have been going through my best ever stage of ball striking and was hitting them quite well today its just I had 4 or 5 in the round that were quite poor- a couple were fat and a couple turned over and ended up left of the target. The reason I am slightly despondent with this is on wednesday I played 14 holes and never played a bad iron ending on 5 over for these holes which I was very happy with, and the only shots I dropped were poor pitches / chips which is a major point for work for me and I went out today expecting the same and it just wasn't. Even the good ones today didn't match wednesdays efforts where for the 5 holes of the back 9 I was level par.

Whilst thinking about this though, all be it on a slight tangent, I am very confident that my sudden change in form (a couple of weeks ago I was shooting high 80s and am now comfortably shooting mid/ low 80s everytime around varying courses) is due to my acquisition of a skycaddie. Nothing else has changed and I haven't been trying anything new, this has got to be the difference as it is certainly making me hit more greens.

eaglehunter,

I and many others on here have always advocated that if you have a SC in your hand you can stand over the ball with the utmost confidence that you have the right club in your hand (allowing for weather conditions and presuming you have tracked how far you hit each club). With correct clubbing comes confidence which breeds a smoother swing and leads to better striking and the ball flying longer and more accurately.

Before everyone shoots me down in flames I realise that you do have to put a decent swing into the equation. I'm just making the point that these gadgets really do make the course management side easier and does give a player a mental boost.

I agree entirely homer.

Even off the tee I find myself playing much more intelligent golf such as taking a 5 wood to eliminate the chance of reaching the bunkers on one of our courses 3rd. This still leaves me with a 7 iron and takes out the risk. I have parred this everytime since I have had my skycaddie. (I bet that has put a jinx on it ;) )

Also on par 5s knowing what distance to lay up to and what club I need for this is unbelievably helpful.

Knowing that I have 100% the right club though does do all what you say. It gives you confidence which results in a good shot and you can then build on this. I for the first time in my golfing life have found myself building up rhythm off of good strikes that travel the correct distance and end up pin high. When you plan this out from knowing the yardage and then execute it and see it come off you feel so good! This is how I played 6 holes in level par on wednesday. One good shot lead to another, and when striking well I feel like I can now pick off the yardages. It's great. Long may it continue.

I have done this on several courses over the years on par 3s, it doesnt mean that I am anything special as I can make a hash of them as good as anyone. the way I play them is not to try too hard and even if I miss the green I can very often up and down, as long as I have a decent lie. The moment I start trying to hit the green next to the flag and expect a birdie is often the moment I take a 4 or 5. :p

Same herb. I find my best results on the 3's is when I take an extra club and swing easy. I almost always find the middle that way and two putt.

My par 3 play has improved tenfold i put it down to playing par 3 courses with some workmates new to the game, like has been said taking it easy just trying to put it there or there abouts tends to get me closer to the flag

This also used to be one of my targets when I was playing regularly. I would want to par 3 or the 6 par 3's at my course on every round. I knew though, that if I was to card a good score, I would need to be looking to par at least 4.

There was one round where I did get all 6 down in par. It didn't seem to matter what I did that day, but every shot was dead at the pin. Two tee shots hit the flag! All worked well that day, but I agree that it is pretty rare to par all the apr 3's, especially with a te shot and two putts each time.

I learned most of my short game on a 9 hole with lots of par 3s, they are worth their weight in gold in my view, I believe all new golfers would be better equipped if they joined one for a year before venturing to a bigger(full size) course.

Yes but Im still stupid enough to do it especially when the rest of the round has been good..doh! This is where I often card a good looking round only to see Ive lost 2 or 3 strokes on the par 3s heh heh

I agree with the benefits of par 3 courses. I stareted out on the par 3 course at Rutland Water, a great challenge requring every club up to a 3 wood. Gave me a great foundation and I am more likely to par the short holes on my course than any other (and with my handicap that gives a useful 3 points on these holes most weeks)

Best i have done on our course which has five par 3's is two under three pars and two birdies longest is 220yrds and the sortest is 175yrds. I have pared all of them on the rare occation but usualy happy with one or two over for them.
