is there a new on dmds (mobile phones)

Any smartphone in question may have the hardware as part of manufacture that could provide, direction (Compass), weather info, height, angle etc..., but they need an app to function. I agree with Duncan in that a golfing related app is pretty much useless as a DMD without the hardware functionality that a smart phone provides. But what I was trying to understand and quite possibly and written wrong is that if any app on the phone can use the built in hardware functionality then that app renders the phone as non conforming, which is why I wrote that in that instance such app should be uninstalled leaving only the apps that conform.

However, I appreciate that the wording is up for much interpretation and debate as the clarity is non existent.

On the subject of app, Swing by swing do a great no conforming app, you can use it to measure you shots and over time if used continually it can recommend a club for any given distance, it also has many other data collection areas, which provide numerous stats. I used to use it, but found it was to much hassle inputting the data, distracted me from my round and slowed me up, but that's another thread topic :)

From the link I posted:

Q. If a player uses his smartphone to look up a weather forecast, is the player gauging the conditions?

No. Accessing weather reports provided by a weather station through an app or internet browser, is not considered to be actively measuring or gauging the conditions and is permissible.

Q. My smartphone has an inbuilt spirit level as part of the functionality of the phone but it is not part of the distance-measuring app. Can I use the phone as a distance-measuring device?

Yes, provided that you do not use the level in a manner that might assist you in your play.

Q. My smartphone has a compass feature. Can I use the phone as a distance-measuring device?

Yes. A compass only provided directional information and does not gauge or measure variable conditions or assist the player in his play.

I'm guessing my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 remains non-confirming as it still has all of the following sensors, the ones in bold being the issue:

- Accelerometer, Geomagnetic, Gyro, RGB light, Barometer, Proximity, Gesture, Temperature & Humidity, Hall available

correct

this could be a function of the operating system (without trying to be pedantic) but in any event it's the existence of the hardware itself that renders the device non-conforming in the first instance if what it directly measures could assist a player in his play. This is why there basically weren't any (2 I knew off) smartphones that could be used as DMDs until the recent changes that took out of play 'compass' and 'accelerometer' sensors. So, from a hardware perspective these are now - thermometer, barometer and anemometer (temperature, pressure and wind speed).

... if any app on the phone can use the built in hardware functionality then that app renders the phone as non conforming, which is why I wrote that in that instance such app should be uninstalled leaving only the apps that conform.

this is where the difference is crucial - you can't uninstall hardware (ignoring some of the more competent hacks!) and it's the existence of that which, in the case of the above, renders the device non-conforming. however, there are applications that use data that in itself does not assist the player in his play (spirit level being the easiest example) but that combined with an application can...

again using a practical example may help = GPS will enable the phone to know where it is in 3d ie height and position. that's OK (it has to be or all GPS devices would be NC!!!) but if you use, or have loaded on your device, an application that will show you in 3d where you are relative to your targets height then it would be NC, or shows the slope between them, or converts the absolute yardage into an effective yardage etc etc then that application should be removed from the device before use as a DMD.

Im planning on using my Golfshot app on an old Iphone 3gs which has the standard compass but nothin else.
The golfshot app shows distances and then I log the score afterwards.

I wont be using the compass, basically because I dont see the need, I know which way North is thanks.

I will ask if this is OK before playing in any comp. That includes meets with you fellas!!!!
