Is that "The Zone" I just passed through?

We had our midweek stableford yesterday and I'm pleased to report that I stopped my run of seven consecutive 0.1s with a solid gross 79 for 34 points. It wasn't the cut it should have been thanks to 3 sloppy double bogey blobs but at least for the 1st time in weeks there were no trebles. But that isn't the real point of the post...

For the first 8 holes I think I may have experienced "The Zone", it was Tee to Green perfection, my swing felt in sync and had great tempo and as a result I hit 5 of the 1st 6 fairways and 7 of the first 8 greens and was giving myself really good looks at birdie. The only surprise is that none of the putts dropped. I could have easily been 2 or 3 under through 8 holes but had to settle for 8 straight pars.

It all came a a halt with the first of my 3 sloppy doubles in the 9th. The back nine wasn't quite as consistent but I still hit some great shots and but for 2 further doubles it could have been another cut.

But those first 8 holes, if only I could bottle that...

It was the same for me a few weeks back when I played the Kintyre course at Turnberry.

I got up and down from a greenside bunker on the 1st for a birdie (Par 5 1st) and holed a putt on the 2nd for another birdie. The next 3 holes were Par-Par-Birdie, hitting every fairway and green in regulation, and but for a lipped out putt on the 4th green I would have been 4 under thru 5 holes. But 3 under thru 5 with not a duff shot in sight was wonderful.

I think at that stage my mind started to race and got the better of me and I walked off the 18th at the end of the round with a 95 for my round.

So the search is now on to find the guy who played those first 5 holes for me!! :D

It's a great feeling. I've strung a few runs like that together that make a mockery of my handicap, sadly I've never gotten it to last more than 7 consecutive holes then the usual inconsistency roller coaster service resumes - usually due to my long game.

Had the pleasure of playing with Hawkeye yesterday. Less said about my own game the better but he had it on the proverbial string for the front nine. The double at nine was a tad sloppy but that aside he never looked like getting in trouble. I would say that his holing out from 3-6 foot was superb and he saved par a number of times so maybe this countered the missed birdie putts. I've no doubt if he carries on like that he can go much lower and set a new PB before the season is out

I was playing a comp round at the beginning of the year and had a similar experience on the back 9... was 7 over par after 9.... don't really know what happened, but for the back 9 I was level par heading into the 18th...unfortunate bogie there meant an overall of 1 over for the back 9... definitely in the zone... where strangely I take no practice strokes at all... not with drives, irons or putting... only with short chips... just walked up, decided on a club and gave it a whack. Tried it since however with completely different results!
