Played in a four ball, individual Stableford today. One of our group had practised chipping on to the 18th green before the match and another player said that meant DQ, as it was a stroke play competition. Looking at the rules, included in the definition of stroke play is the need to complete every hole, which does not apply to Stableford.

So, is practising on the course, prior to playing, allowed before a Stableford comp?

Yes. Stableford is Strokeplay - Rule 32-1.

Practice on the course is not allowed before strokeplay comp, so DQ unfortunately!

Unless there is a condition of competition prohibiting this, you can practice chipping and putting on or around the last green played, or around the next tee, unless this unduly delays play. Rule 7-2.

delc, the relevant rule is 7-1. The OP was talking about practice prior to the round.

What do you expect?

He's not going to bother to read the question as he's far too eager to see his answer on the screen.
Just trying to make the point that practicing chipping and putting during a round is not always against the rules, although doing so on or around a green that you haven't yet played (as in the original question) definitely is! I have been pulled up several times for practising putting on a green I have just played, or practicing chipping around the next tee, if I am not holding up play. I think that this is not allowed as a condition of competition on the European Tour, so some players seem to think that this always applies in stroke play comps! Stablefords are definitely stroke play competitions btw. :)
