......is the current debate on Sunday Morning Live.

I think the main thrust of the NO it's not argument is the cost on the NHS. Not just rip roaring drunk btw, just enough to be mildly annoying drunk.

What do the enlightened members of the forum think?

Nothing wrong with being drunk on the odd occasion

I don't drink. So don't really have much insight but being out last night and seeing the state of some people it puzzles me how that can be enjoyable. A lot of money to effectively erase your memory, risk injury and or doing something stupid and thats not to even start on hangovers and the poaaibility if a wasted day "recovering".
So for me the question swings around to why anyone would want to get drunk...?

I'm very much the same, although I will drink, but very rarely, I see no point in drinking so much you can't stand or walk.
Not only that but physically drinking enough liquid to get you drunk appears to be no effort at all to most people, most would struggle to drink the same amount in water over the same period.

150yds to my local, anything between 300yds -750yds back, depending on how drunk I am

I enjoy a drink but I have not been drunk for nearly 45 years, I don't see the point in drinking to get drunk.

As I have said before to you, with age comes wisdom.

Enjoy the conviviality and relaxation that goes with a a couple of pints or glasses of wine but, like yourself, see absolutely no point or enjoyment in getting drunk.

Can see both sides here
Depends what we are calling "drunk".
I think people drink to get the happy feeling they get before they've drunk too much and either become ill or misbehaved, and sometimes people get that wrong.
Some of the happiest, funniest, memorable moments in life come from having a few beers or wines. One or tow of the most embarassing were when I'd crept too close or over the limit. And those generally in the early 20s, so certainly the "wisdom with age" thing.

However, trying to persuade a load of teens that we know better than them is about as hopeful as getting a consensus on dress codes.

Of course it is nothing new. Making has been getting obliterated since time began in the most primitive of societies. Playing golf however, now that is a more modern aberration.

get as drunk as you want, just don't be a knob when you are by doing a number of things:

being a general knob
driving
fighting
getting so drunk you need hospitalization

apart from that, crack on!

Problem is that there are different levels of drunk. I probably get drunk a few times a year these days but never so drunk that I have any problem walking, or become abusive. I generally relax when I've had a few, am more likely to sing and engage in a bit of banter. I think if you are having problems remembering things the next day then you are probably drinking too much. Haven't done that since my early thirties.
