I remember as a wee boy, going to the farm and my dad buying a big bag of potatoes (56lb) from the farmer.
Nowadays, you buy them in much smaller bags
For example

Yesterday, my gob was seriously smacked when I saw this in Asda

So not only do they remove the skins for you which we are told holds all the goodness, they charge you 81p extra for a 2.5 kg bag.
How lazy are we becoming that we need our potatoes peeled for us.

I can remember the 56lb bags, £2:45, me and my brother had to pick one up on the way home from school now and again, good fun trying to get that bag on your bike !

As to washed spuds, ripoff, but in saying that my good lady buys all our veg from a local shop and all comes pre washed and trimmed, cost an extra £2-3 ever time, nothing wrong with a bit of dirt and mud with you veg.

I went to the Spalding Farm shop the other day with the intention of buying a 12.5kg bag of spuds. They used to sell them there a few years ago but I haven't been in for a while. What used to be a farm shop is now just like a supermarket with a coffee shop attached to it? None of the veg looks like its been near any soil. All trimmed and cleaned. Plus they don't sell the large sacks of spuds anymore. What a farce.

When you can't buy a bag of spuds in Lincolnshire you know somethings very wrong..
If you have a local chippy Ron it might be worth asking them were they get theirs from. We have a wholesaler near us, and they don't mind selling the odd sack to the public.

As reguards Bobs post, i'am with you all the way. As peoples time really become so precious they can't spare a couple minutes to wash veg??

25 kg bag of spuds straight from the farm for £5. Great tatties, great value and I know exactly how they have been treated as a close friend works on the farm.

That's exactly what the local 'farm' shop has become here too. It is on a farm and it is a shop - and small nursery - but everything has come from the Market rather than direct from nearby farms!

It does, however, serve the function that the local Fruit and Veg shop used to provide. None of those around here any more! Local shops used to have Butcher, Fishmonger, F&V and a ('slightly' famous) Bookshop. Two of those are now Charity shops, the other now sells posh kitchen and tableware.

Buy from the farmers when ever possible.

When working on spud farm before we emigrated we did on occasion sell spuds to Asda via merchant for 100 GBP/Ton and same spuds in local Asda, unwashed and loose, were 400 GBP/Ton the next day
