Is it important?

Yes it's very important. Proper punctuation and grammar are the difference between.............

"He helped his uncle Jack, off a horse"

and

"He helped his uncle jack off a horse"

Which are two very different things.

It saves lives !!

And im rubbish when it comes to punctuation

Of course they shouldn't use punctuation without it the written word loses no meaning at all in fact I believe that people who flaunt their fancy commas full stops and heaven forbid semi colons are just showing off think of the millions of pounds that are wasted every year on ink and paper just because of archaic grammatical rules while I think of it laptops could be made smaller and lighter without the punctuation keys a further saving on manufacturing resources and even fuel savings during the transportation of said laptops this clear concise reply amply demonstrates that punctuation is unnecessary

Theirs a lad at our plaice that's a reel grammar and speeling control freek. If I had put out that first sentence in an email, you'd see his face turn red and then he'd be calling people all the useless knobs in the world. It's fun now just to wind him up.

That written if your first language is English then using and understanding the correct grammar and spelling should be automatic, the number of people who get 'its and it's (it is)' wrong or 'there, their and they're (they are)' is astonishing.

Took me two goes to read that, I nearly passed out after 'archaic grammatical'

Yes it is. But from a forum perspective pointing out another persons errors is just sad and pathetic.

Lots of legislation written without much punctuation. Always thought that was odd.

Russian language has done very well with 20% less letters! no "the" or "a" , as a result a highly emotive language, very beautiful prose.

If you have to have the punctuation in order to not mislead the reader then perhaps there might be an easier / better way of saying it?

My personal most hated piece of illiteracy is people who right 'should of' rather then 'should have'.

mine is people who don't know the difference between they're, there and their. I think there all idiots!

:smirk:

Spelling is a different issue.

The original post was supposed to be a light hearted look at how punctuation can change the meaning of the written word.
