Monday kicked off our Junior Championship and due to me qualifying 1st out of 8 i drew an 24 handicapper in the 1st round. I played OK (1 over through 11) and beat him 8&7 but never really got the strike i was after. Played the Semi-Final against a 12 handicapper on Thursday and lost the 1st 2 holes but managed a 3&2 win....somehow . Tomorrow will be the 36 hole Final against a 17 handicapper who ive never played against but i know he can hit good scores. Im just hoping all the hard work will pay off to retain my title of Junior Champion........heres hoping ;)

Over 36 holes? Just play your own game. Off 17 he is going to blow a few holes here and there.

Just remember that matchplay is the only form of golf where you are playing against an opponent - not the course and whole field. It doesn't matter what you score on a particular hole - as long as it is no more (nett) than your opponent.

Best of luck Owen.

OWEN...good luck,,,as Leftie says it is going to be a long day over 36 your handicaps/strokes will come into play as will your strengths/attitude..
Hope you do as well as you hope that you wish for!!!!

Jimbo ;) ;)

Good luck Owen, you just have to play your game.

As Leftie said, he's almost certain to blow up a bit even for just a few holes then you take advantage.

Be prepared and organised. Make sure you've got everything you are going to need in the bag tonight so you don't have to worry about it in the morning.

Work out your timings too. When you need to be at the course, how long a warm up you're going to do, so that you are not in a rush and can be in the proper mindset to play.

The match could go the full 36 holes so be prepared for that.

Decent nutrition will help you go the full distance too minimising the fatigue and loss of concentration down the home stretch. Plenty of carbs beforehand. Low fat. Breakfast could be scrambled eggs with brown toast.

Bananas, fresh fruit, dried fruit and/or nuts during the round. Avoid your Mars, Snickers etc. Especially over a 36 hole event.

Hydration. Drink a litre of water over the hour before the game starts to ensure you are fully hyrdrated. You should probably aim to take on 2-3 litres more over the 36 holes too.

36 holes is a marathon not a sprint. Don't try to be too clever or try to win early. Off 17, your opponent should make more mistakes than you. Capitalise on them. Don't be too aggressive on holes when you are giving your opponent a shot. Make a solid par and force them to play well to take a hole off you.

That's my lot. So, all the very best of luck and let us know how you get on.

Also, a 17 h/c is still going to make a few pars especially since he's playing well enough to get to the final, and some of them he'll get a shot on.

Don't get down on yourself or start thinking you can't win or he's a bandit when he does this, sooner or later you will get your chances.

Make the beggar putt out every time !

17 handicappers are rarely the most consistant putters, even if they are striking the ball well.

He'll hate you, and crack.

It's the Club Championship

Thanks everyone for the comments etc :). I did win, 10&8 to be precise but lets just say it wasnt as easy as expected. He was about 12 over in the first 18 but somehow i managed to be 6up, and the remaining holes he wasnt many over par but eventually closed the deal. At the end i thanked him for not giving in and giving me a good game and that if he played like what he did against me or better then its his next year in my opinion. It also should boost his confidence and he does deserve everything he wins from now on........Bring on the mens Championship next year ;)
