I do not nor never will, unless forced to, bank on the internet. Now with the media warning of impending doom for everyone due to Russian hackers do you trust your bank account and it's contents to the internet and a flimsy password ?

Yes , been doing it for over 6 years.

Trust it more in NZ. Even when I put a 0 in the wrong place whilst transferring funds for a house purchase in NZ they rang me to alert me of my error.

Mind you out there with our bank they'd alert you if you had not paid your CC bill and gave you 48 hrs grace to do so :)

I think that particular ship has sailed as so everything about you is online, so any determined hacker will be able to get at your information. All you can do is make it as hard as possible so they target someone else.

Never personally had any issues with it

But any bank account will be at risk from hackers even if you don't do Internet banking because all your information is stored on databases with banks etc

This :D

And as Sainthacker says, I never keep my money long enough for them to nick anything anyway

Its very safe and I have used it since day 1, your more likely to get done by a dodgy waiter cloning your card or fall for a phishing scam

E-Banking has been going about 20 years and how many cases of security breaches have been identified? And it would be big news!

It's only as safe as YOU make it though.

If you allow phishing emails and other viral threats to attack your device, then YOU are compromising YOUR security.

So make sure you have anti-virus is competent and your email provider sorts out spam/phishing.

always great when someone has a go at something but doesnt actually understand how it operates. Takes far more than a flimsy password to access or use my bank account (you actually need my account code my debit card my pin number and the security code generator machine). Even then once you do get into the account there are limitations on what can be done "instantly" with out me being notified.

but hey the russians will be here soon to break my flimsy password

Personally, I've used it since the late 90's with no issues at all. That's not to say I'll never have one but enough to give me very high confidence in the systems. Most have 2 factor security in place nowadays (ie something you know - password, something physical you have - card and reader) which is much better than password alone. Have recently got a phone app and now even easier.....can't remember last time I wrote a cheque. I always ask for Acc No and Sort Code and it's done in a couple of mins, almost instantaneous payment too so better for both parties and so easy.

30/40 years ago the same debate was being had over credit cards and cash machines. Yes there were always instances on security being compromised but on the whole the chances were so low as to be insignificant. Internet banking is just the same. You need to make sure you protect yourself though. I don't know the exact figures but I would imagine a very high percentage of security breaches are self inflicted.

A lot of banks have a password then, say, three letters to choose from a dropdown list. The latter means if there's a key logger on your computer they can't discover it. Also, I logged onto my bank using a different browser the other day an was asked for an additional piece of security info. Not sure how that works but it's quite comforting.

As one friend quoted "there's always far too much month left at the end of my money"

I check my account most days, but I'm hardly holding onto a fortune, so if I don't recognise something I can be straight onto the bank!

Yes, it is safe. Been using it for years with no problems. Nowadays we have combinations of account numbers, PIN's, and card readers to make it even safer.

Never mind internet banking - what about these new touchpay debit cards. Yes you have to put in your PIN first time you use it that way - and will get asked occasionally. But if a baddy gets hold of my card and isn't required to enter my PIN then what?

Internet banking is awesome. I use it all the time and it saves me going into branches.

It is as safe as you make it. Use a really good password and substitute numbers for letters e.g. Tiger Woods would be 71g3r W0od5. Check your account once a week (transactions, Direct Debits and Standing Orders) and change your password periodically.

When I was a Bank Manager nearly all fraud was committed by family and friends who knew enough about the person to access their accounts. The loss of money wasn't as bad as the loss of trust sometimes.

Eye, I thought the same with this touch payment or whatever it is. What security is there if someone thieves/clones your card other than the bank looking out for irregular transactions?

There is a £20 limit on contactless payments and it should trigger an alarm if its been used to many times.
