Is 14 clubs too many/too few for the amateur

This forum takes pedantry to a whole new level....

I purchased my TM 19* mid rescue club before I had ever heard the word Hybrid...

I bough my TM 21* as a stage 2 hybrid as advertised...

If you google the images you will see what I mean..

So apologies for the confusion.. I will be replacing the 2 hybrids I am not sure about, with the newer Jetspeed equivalent..

I hope that helps.

Hahah, I wasn't trying to be a pedant, I just wondered whether there were differences between the two, like a hybrid was more of a wood focus, and a rescue was more "iron" like! Cheers for explaining though!

enjoyed when Faldo said we should do away with tees to bring back ball striking. here here! great idea!

stop them bombing drivers 400 yards down these old courses.

Faldo - 6 majors, Jack won as many Masters ;)

I'd agree that it does help striking and maybe they should place maximum length limit on tee height ... 1/2" ? I bough a bag recently and they must be have been about 4 " long... !

1/2" tee with a 460 cc driver would be interesting. Makers would start reducing volume again..

I know in the past they carried more than 14 and thats why the limit was set but I think you can have too much choice, I'd like too see it cut to 12 with 56 as the most lofted wedge. Bring some creativity back to the game.

Why limit it to 56? Surely reducing to 12 will make more creativity, as they probably wouldn't have 4 wedges?

I agree about the 12 however! Would be good to make them lose a few clubs.

creativity, skill and judgement are three attributes that maketh the good golfer the need for which is gradually being 'eroded' (my biased description) or replaced in part or whole by technology. But ho hum.

Played as a youngster with a half set if clubs and was probably a more proficient shot maker as a result. Still enjoy the challenge of a half set during the winter months when I play for the fun of it and a bit of exercise.

Probably only carry 12 if I'm hauling the whole bag :)

I use 13 clubs at present.

Between October-March last I just used 7 clubs, didn't make much difference to scores. Obviously at that time of the year there was placing so that would have helped

I carry a full set now
Why?
Well I use a push trolley to save my back from carrying
Ad seeing as I'm pushing, I might as well put them all in.

If I was carrying I joule easily play 3W, 4h, 6,8, W,GW, SW, LW, P
Personally, if I'm dropping long clubs, more important to have tighter ranges on my wedges as i'll be playing from lay ups more often.

I've gone out with a full 14 and less than half that, and it made no difference to my score

I'm rubbish regardless of the amount of clubs

I don't think it would make much (if any) difference to my play if I was to be allowed to carry 13, 14 or 15 clubs (I carry 13 at the moment). Probably says more about my game though.....

Think 14 is just right.

I started off with a half set as that was all my post office savings account could afford. Lovely set of Petron Impala. Club by club I added until I had a full set. Each club was a hard earned addition and I'm sure I must have hit shots on the course with the new club even if the distance/lie didn't dictate it being the right one just to hit it. These days with a full set, I hit what I think I need to hit. Doesn't guarantee it'll go where I want it

I shot my best ever round (gross 71) with ten clubs in the bag, I have also shot 74 without a putter (used a hybrid), although if using a trolley I take 14 clubs, when carrying I usually parr that down to about 10, so I certainly dont see the need for more than 14.

I have 14 but have had to drop the 60# wedge to fit in a 7 wood which I need as there are a lot of long par 4's on our course. I miss the 60 sometimes, especially as I bought a brand new Vokey with pro shop vouchers about 5 years ago which has barely seen the course, so would be happy if we were allowed 15.

I played nine today with Driver, 3W, 3H, 6 iron, 52*, 56* and putter. Shot four over with a 3 putt. I think that's a bit extreme though so I'll probably lose a wedge and 3W and put in a couple more irons.

deano, strange choice of 52 and 56. surely a 9i or 8i would be a better spread!

Absolutely would have, but I failed to mention that I have just bought as new set that I expected to turn up yesterday and they still haven't, which meant I only have a 6 iron apart from wedges. That old Hogan blade saw some action today!
