I'm looking to get a new set of bats in the near future, and I was wondering how best to narrow down options. Just looking at brands that have a good name/review may be as good a method as any.

I've listed below a few top brands, in what order in what order would you rate them ( add other brands if you wish):

Callaway

Mizuno

Nike
Ping

Taylormade

Titleist
(I'll collate results into a league table in a few days)

This will just end up with "i play ping, they are the best" or whatever.

In all honesty, all of the "premium" brands you have listed are much of a much, best piece of advice i can offer is go and try as many as you can, Also do not discount the lesser known brands such as Orka, Benross, Cobra etc etc etc.

Try as many as you can, chose the ones A. you like the look of and B perform the best.

This is very easy

1. The ones you like best
2. The ones you like second best
3. The ones you like next best after the second best ones

;)

Have fun trying as many as you can.

Try some and which ever feels best and looks best to you is the ones

For me its ...

( 1) Mizuno
(2) Titleist

Havent tried the others , had a Ping driver that was excellent tho

As said above try as many as you can. I tried Ping, Titleist, Mizuno, Taylormade & Callaway - Went in there wanting the Titliest or Taylormades and came out with the Callaway and the Pings were a very close second.

If you can get a fitting with trackman or similar that should really help narrow down your choices

in my opinion don't even come back to this thread until you have seen, handled and tried a club from each of the ones you mentioned, or as Rooter quite rightly pointed out you will get everyone else's biases.

p.s I tried the ping i25 last week- that is one stupidly easy club to hit :mmm:

And to get the ball rolling:

1. Ping
2. Titleist
3. Nike
4. Mizuno
5. Taylormade
6. Callaway

(Based on experience, perception and what I've read from forumers)

Which shaft are you going to fit though? I had a Titleist fitting on Monday and the best shaft for my swing did not even come into my reckoning before hand. It turns out that with an AP2 head I need a Project X, PXi 5.5. I thought I would be fit for a bog standard Dynamic Gold S300 or something similar. Apparently my girly swing is not man enough for these so I cannot get them to produce enough spin. It will be interesting to see what my Mizuno fitting will come up with next Tuesday.

None of the big manufacturers, in fact most manufacturers with perhaps the exception of real budget brands (Fazer etc) make bad clubs these days. Try before you buy is my advice and just see what suits your swing and eye. Not sure how you can rank any of these as each manufacturer has numerous models in their ranges

Try a lot of sets, decide between two or three you like and price match for value.

Dont be afraid to look at last years offerings because if they were the ' new improved performance ' last year then they are just the same this year.

Good luck in your search

Best thing you can do is go to a good pro who stocks most of the brands who can assess you level and requirements and make some suggestions- get him to tape up any Identifying marks and then hit them and choose the one you hit the best - that way you are buying the best club for you, not the one you think is best because of advertising.

hmmm, I am hankering over some TM TP CB's at the mo, then again I also quite like the look of Mizuno JPX 825 & EZ forged, mind you the 712 AP1/AP2 are also quite appealing....

Basically there are loads of decent irons from all manufacturers, hit a few and then decide.

This serve me right for saying I was going to buy a new set , I should just have left it as rate your favorite iron brands.

I will hit as many as possible at my local AG and then go to a pro for a proper custom fit

Thanks all for your insightful input :D

They are still all the same. However, since I've only ever had Ping, Callaway or Titleist, those top, the others 2nd :)

I'm in the process of getting new irons also and have narrowed it down to ping and titleist. This just being the clubs that I like the look of and perform well with having been properly fitted. But I suggest you just hit all the clubs that you like until you find the ones that you hit the best regardless of brand. RickG uses Orka and he says the service from the company is fantastic.
so like one of the previous posters said, don't overlook the smaller brands and I believe the fella that works for Orka is on this forum somewhere.
Good luck in your search for a new set of irons. Hope it improves your game :one:
