My tee shots and short-game are significantly better than my handicap implies. I can drive anywhere between 250 and 300 yards where I want it, and I have a very natural and confident feel around the greens, getting a lot more chip-ins than most.

The problem is my irons, as I just can't seem to hit a crisp iron or hybrid shot, they just seem to be a mixture of shanks, duffs, tops, and very weak impacts (such as a 6-iron going 100 yards ) I'm 20 years-old, a big guy at 6'3", broad shoulders and thin waist, so a 100 yard 6-iron is just unacceptable!

The amount of times I split the fairway 250 yards, mess-up my approaches, and have to do a top-notch chip and putt to save a point is remarkable. I'm confident if I can just get 9/10 iron shots in the AIR, then my handicap will plummet.

I was assessed by a pro last year, and he said I have a beautifully correct swing, I just don't know what's happened lately.

I'm using PING G20 irons, just a standard game-improvement iron, so it's not like they're musclebacks or anything. Inevitably there's some confidence issues going on, but only I can sort that out.

I have some lesson vouchers, but it's just finding the time to take them.

Anyone have any tips, or advice how to get a good, crisp iron shot, or just get it into the air for that matter?

Sounds like a swing flaw, I know a 20 capper who can stick he's 3w out to 250 yards on demand, he's iron play is awesome but can't score through a poor short game, he also tightens up majorly over the ball with a big dog in he's hand thank good or he could be real menace.

My advice would be spend some time with a pro, not just a quick fix lesson but a course of lessons and try and iron out the flaw.

The other option is some videos down the line and face on and post them in the ask the experts section, there are some knowledgeable players here that will put ya right,

Post a video :)

Better people on here than me to give advice but hitting shots with your feet together can help, keeps the body still and swing relatively on line,

Like, I said, I have a voucher for 6 lessons with the pro at my club, I'm just extremely busy until early february, so I'm struggling for time at the moment.

Only way you'll get real help and guidance is to post a video of your swing.

I'll have to get some filmed of me in my practice net. I have a few on my phone with my driver, but the irons ones are really old, when I was actually hitting the ball well. A comparison could be in order :fore:

It's just really frustrating when you can do the hard things, like hit drives long and straight, and chip within a few feet from of the hole, yet I can't physically get an 8-iron off the ground

I was referring to the strong, athletic build, so I should beable to hit a ball!

You can be built like a brick wall, but if you can't make contact with the ball it doesn't really matter. Try and focus on making a good solid strike more so than hitting it hard, that could be more where you're going wrong

I am always sceptical when people come on here bragging about hitting out towards 300 yards and straight regularly yet still have a huge handicap. There are a few on here that I have seen do it, off a much lower handicap mind. Please excuse my cynicism but if you are doing that well off a tee then you should be able to reproduce it with irons. If it is such an issue surely the simplest answer short of posting a clip on here is to go to a pro and get a lesson.

try and hit the ball into the ground. I guarantee it will go in the air. yes you will be hitting down more than you should but the ball will go in the air.

I played a lot in the summer (2-3 times a week), and driving was my weakest point, so I learnt the basics, practiced hell of a lot, and now driving is just drilled into my muscle memory. When the driver is in my hand, I just know nothing can go wrong, it's a confidence thing. I'm loose, relaxed and confident, which is the complete opposite of my irons. It's only over the autumn when I haven't been playing as much (once per month), when my irons have gone out of the window.
