A friend of mine recently purchased a set of irons secondhand of ebay and was delighted with their condition,we went off to the local range and he was noticing a vast difference with each clubs distance.I suggested putting the set together with the toe`s off the irons up against a wall in iron sequence to check the lengths.WOW even thou they were the same model and shafts the lengths were ridiculously out,the 3 and 4 were the same length, the 9 was 1/4 inch shorter than the PW! and the rest didnt tie in, and thats before checking the lofts and lie`s.We really dont know what we are getting when we buy secondhand off ebay and can only judge by the pics,my advice would be to check for the obvious as soon as you get them so you can send them back cos some of these set ups could seriously ruin your game, remember even the slightest difference in consecutive length will play havoc with distances.

Its ok Shivas....I dont buy off Ebay.....Get your buddy a GPS and he can tune in all his iron distances ;) :D

genuines or fake?
Genuine fella, just a bloody mix match of shafts.Must be different sets or original set re-shafted by a total muppet....he`s sending them back through ebays buyer protection.Just further to this buying any gear off a seller who offers "No Refunds" is a real no no,the sellers are actually protected with what they sell, they dont have to refund on anything when they state this and ebay allow it.

only trouble buying from pics i guess

Very little protection for Sellers on eBay these days...
If the item sold isn't right in any way the buyer can return - regardless of whether the seller states no refunds or returns. And if you paid through PayPal then you're covered.

In my experience the Pay Pal protection isn't worth the paper it is written on. I bought a one piece leather motor bike suit, all the pictures looked perfect however the guy had came off his bike tearing some of the stitching in addition to abrading the leather. Neither pay pal or ebay wanted anything to do with it.

I think you`ll find that if the seller does state "No Returns" they are covered by law and ebay understand this and cant do anything about it,a mate contacted ebay over an issue with a non golf related item to get a refund and was told this?? mad if its a fact as sellers could sell any old tat and not get any comeback.

If they have after market grips, dollars to donuts its a DIY job gone wrong.

I was thinking this. Maybe someone messed around with them to suit their "style"...?!?

I bought some second-hand Mizunos and they were dodgy. I took 'em to a club fitter to sort out the lengths, lies and lofts.

Best £40 (?) I ever spent. Some of them were well wrong.....I often wondered if they'd been odds and ends from a few different sets.....or they had 3 sets in (for some reason) and they got mixed up.

Yes I agree that people do alter them to suit their style,I know elite players on tour will have a mix match(obviously consecutive) of lengths on the shafts, they may jump up 1/4 inch and then 1/2 inch on the next club, but these were bad really bad and proberly two sets mixed up.Poor form selling them thou as the seller must have known and it wasnt stated.

I've said it before on here but why oh why take the risk on e-bay. I would rather pay a little bit more and get a second hand set from AG (heaven forbid) a driving range or a local pro. At least that way I could look at them before any cash parted company and more importantly try them first. I'd never buy any club I hadn't hit

I actually experienced this with a new set of Mizunos (MP30s - the only new set I've ever bought).

Apparently, this is not uncommon. There's often 1 or 2 clubs in a 'set' that is/are vastly out from the rest.

Agree that it's money well spent. My 'most-hated' club, that was miles out, became my favourite and ball-striking of the rest was much better too. Oh, and that was free, as I'd gone for a Driver fitting and the loft/lie check was gratis!

er - No, but....

If it's a business seller, or someone selling in the coure of their business (the former are labelled in eBay, the latter may not be!) then the 2000 DMD applies and 'returns' that comply with the directive have to be made - you cannot opt out of them!

However, and this is I believe the basis to the 'no returns' labels sometimes seen, many private sellers opt in to eBay's returns process; which is why some private sellers then opt out by stating 'no returns'.

Returns are statutory, and generally do not require any reason at all; you no longer want it is enough. There are certain goods that are outside these regulations, and to confuse things further some sellers that provide these (personalised goods as an example) may put no returns in an attempt to clarify this aspect of specific goods.

Finally you have SNAD under eBay's buyer protection - significantly not as described. These are not returns as such. The main issue here is the S. In the case of the motorcycle leathers if they were described as used, were not claimed to be as new, and there's no suggestion that the pictures were faked/photoshoped to conceal wear/damage then they would be unlikely to meet the SNAD rules - they are, after all, motorcycle leathers.

agree the sentiment but many 'local pro's' sell via ebay as it's an easy way for them to market a little (lot) wider than their small shop!

this also supports their ability to offer trade in prices on new clubs too because they won't get stuck with stock - most simply don't have the capital capabilities.

they are generally easy to spot as they make it claer who they are - and have a phone they answer!

My current irons were an e-bay purchase...

On 'winning' them the seller contacted me and advised that he had previously sold them and the buyer had returned them as damaged... He wanted me to know this before I made payment in case I wanted to change my mind... I decided to honour my bid and on receiving clubs could only find one minor abberation on the face of the gap wedge... So really pleased with them and puzzled why previous buyer had rejected them...

Think the vast majority of e-bay users are genuine... Its just the relatively few 'bad apples' that attract the bad press...

Ive heard this before with new equipment,I guess the only way to get what you want is to be fitted and get the new set custom made to your spec before you recieve them.No point getting an off the shelf set if distances are not going to tie in with them.
