Ok so I've been meaning to get a new set of irons for a while, but now as I did well in my gcses my parents have promised to put some money towards a new set :) so my budget is around £350, although I could perhaps stretch that a little bit, so far I want to try:

Wilson staff di9
Wilson staff di11
Callaway x22
Nike sq machspeed

Are there any others I should be looking to try?

I'm in the position. Mizuno. Jpx800's should be in that budget range. Certainly a set of irons I'll be really keen on.

Try before you buy ideally somewhere where you can see the flight rather than hitting into a net and relying on a computer to tell you how you hit it

That's definitely what I'll be doing homer, initially I will go to my local pro as he has the irons I mentioned in my post, there is an American golf not too far from me that has a range so I may go there for anything that is particularly recommended that I can't try through my pro

What's you average score. For that kind of money you could ditch the Wilson Di's in favour of the Ci's.

I'd forget the machspeeds in favour of vr cavities if you go down the Nike route.

I agree with others, try before you buy because with that kind of budget you could get a set that would stand you in good stead for many years to come

Another thing I forgot to add was is it worth looking for a set that comes with a sand wedge or buying one separately? Kevoffthetee my average scores are around 100, although my ball striking with irons isn't bad (it's my putting that is really letting me down) my swing is actually pretty much where I'd like it to be as my ball striking with all clubs has become pretty consistent, so I'm thinking a set of irons that is either fitted or certainly tried before I buy would help my game

Hadn't considered mizuno jpx800s, seem to be popular so I'll have a look at those

If you look at that route you have a couple of options.

Option a. Wait for the JPX825's to hit the shelves and try them (stretch your budget)

or

Option b. Wait fir the 825's to come out and wait for the inevitable price crash on the 800's and get them.

Either way its a win/win situaton!

Maybe a cheaper set of clubs and a few putting lessons or a new putter might be a better option?

If you end up going with AG just remember that they will price match. Find the set you want, have a look online and then ask them to do the same deal in store. I bought a set of Cobra Amps about 8 weeks ago and got them to price match with http://www.snaintongolf.co.uk/. Ended up with about £100.00 of their in store price.

My only tip would be to buy second hand. No point paying hundreds of pounds for new when last year's "best thing since sliced bread" are available in nearly new condition at a significantly reduced cost.

£350 would get you some very nice second hand clubs. I just got some Callaway X-22 Tours for £180.

Just to give you a difference of opinion...

There's something lovely about unwrapping each one of your brand new lovely never used before clubs from the box, and taking them down the driving range and taking that first swing with each club. I do understand where the guys talking about second hand come from, but I think as a young guy with a bit of help from your parents, maybe the experience of brand new clubs is something you should consider!!

I play Wilson Staff Di11's, and I've found them reliable, I normally shoot between 100 - 90, so we're in the same handicap catagory.

The sand wedge that comes with the set is good too.

Anyway, there's my two cents, hope I have helped!

Some factors to consider...

As you have just done your GCSEs, have you stopped growing? You might outgrow this set if you suddenly shoot up, so bear that in mind in deciding whether to get an interim set or some to keep for 5-10 years.

How do you anticipate your handicap and game developing? At your age, playing a lot of golf, its very possible you will make big advances and fast. Maybe think about a better player's club, rather than chunky game improvers if you think you might drop 10 shots off your handicap soon.

Other than that, have fun testing, and don't rule anything out just because you have a favourite brand or whatever. I have a bag largely full of Cobra purely becasue their gear has always coem out best from what I've tested.

You'll get a good set of Ping i15's for less than that money.

AG are doing Cleveland CG16's for under £300 with free wedge. I am of similar ability to you - shot 90. last time out and i play with them and love them.

You should be able to test all on your list at AG range. When i bought mine i tried Cobra,Nike and TM Burner but much prefered the feel and
results of the CG16's.

I second that as I've got a set of Cleveland CG16 and love them.
Cleveland seem to get overlooked because they are not as trendy or fashionable as the likes of TaylorMade, Ping etc, but they do make fantastic irons.
I had a Cleveland set before these, they were CG7, but I must admit I prefer the CG16. I too tried various models out before the Cleveland ie Cobra, Taylormade, Yonex, but I much preferred the Clevelands. Give them a try and see how they feel
