Having recently (October) bought myself a new set of irons 4-PW, then joining this forum, Ive started to think about wedges.

According to the Nike Website, the Nike Covert VRS PW has a 44deg loft, I also have an old SW that I kept from my old set (TaylorMade RAC, about 10 years old) no idea what the loft is, and a Callaway 56deg lob wedge.

I quite like the look of the Vokey wedges, however I'm unsure as to what degree lofts to try out.

Have read quite a few threads on here talking about 52, 56 and 60 wedges, just not sure how to go about working out what I would be best to get.

Bounce is the height of the sole. Higher bounce clubs are more forgiving from soft ground, sand and rough. Low bounce clubs are better off of firm ground and tight lies. Bounce stops the leasing edge from digging in so the club literally bounces off of the turf.

Also, If you have a steep downswing then you might be more suited to higher bounce whereas if you're a sweeper then lower would be better.

You would be best trying as many as possible, preferably hitting off the grass.

A Nike PW with a loft angle of 44 degrees? That used to be an 8-iron 20 years ago! Sand wedges are usually 55 or 56 degrees loft and you want to get increments of about 4 degrees between clubs. Say 60 (LW), 56 (SW), 52, 48, 44 (your PW) and so on. You actually seem to need 2 gap wedges! Numbers on the bottoms of irons are becoming pretty meaningless, so perhaps they should now show degrees! :mmm:

delc, 20 years ago I was more interested in getting my nuts wet than how far I could hit an 8-iron.

So you're saying I should look at getting a 48deg and a 52 deg wedge, and keeping my Callaway 56 deg ?

I'm the same, my pw is 44 and my sw 54, so I bought the aw 49. A ping 58 and just for good measure an nz9 60. So now I have every option covered, just need to get out there now decide what's what

Whoopdeedoo! so bleeding what! Just means that the 4 is really a 3 - not all the gaps are 4*.

I agree! Some already do - Scratch for example.

There's no real need to have 2 GWs imo as you don't often hit Wedges full anyway (the 4 degree gap between irons normally means about 10 yards difference in length - on full shots). A 50* is probably suitable and an economic solution. I'd suggest you don't get a Lob Wedge (58 or 60) yet - they can be tricky beasts!

However if you go the 2 GW route (48, 52) approach, I'd suggest dropping the 4-iron - so you have the same number of irons as 'standard', just with 'modern numbers' on the sole!

BTW. Do you have an AW in the set? At 48*, that's what Brits (and others) call a Gap Wedge (with loft of earlier PWs - or maybe more!) so a 52 GW would fit. Most folk I know who have a PF and an AW have a distinct preference for one or the other for chipping etc.

The best way to really decide is to try the 2 options and decide for yourself from the distances. There's really no need to rush though. You can certainly mke good scores with the clubs you already have.

That reference to Golfbidder for bounce is pretty good.

Your Covert's SW will be 54*, so you don't need both that and the 56. If you keep the SW, then that favours the 'just the 50*' approach more.

If it helps the OP, my PW is 45 deg and i carry 52,56 and 60 vokey. However, the gap between the PW and the 52 is too big, i would prefer mine to be a 50, then keep the 56/60..

Go on, I'll say it. Your PW is, for the sake of 2°, my 9 iron :smirk:

Generally speaking lofts are jacked in GI irons to prevent the ball from balooning.

As for your wedges, depends how you like to play?

Full shots into greens, 4 wedges (44°,48°,52°,56°)

A little more creative, 3 wedges (44°,50°,56°)

Why don't you have a chat with one of your pro's at the Gog's, I was lucky enough to play there last year and from memory they were extremely helpful. A quick look at your swing and bag (if they don't already know you) will enable them to advise you, after all the pratice ground is right next to the pro-shop.
