I know you should take what you find on the web with a pinch of salt but in my boredom I decided to checkout the length of iron shafts. I come across the page below then proceeded to measure my irons.

According to this my 7 iron (37") is 1/2" too long and given my height then measurement of wrist to floor I should have 1/4" shorter. This would mean my irons are 3/4" too long.

I'm a HIGH handicapper and am not looking for excuses but this seems a bit extreme. Are the figures on this site standard? It would be a good time to know as I've got some grips on order and could get them sorted in one go.

Yes and no. I went and had a play with some new shineys and was measured up. My wife was offering to pay for some custom fit irons so I had to report back to her before committing to a purchase, originally a set of Cleveland cg16s, std length and 2 deg up

I paid £35 for the fitting which wolud have come off the bill once the irons were ordered but typically isn't get back for a couple of days and checked out eBay in the mean time. My irons came up with the exact spec, I loved how they look, they were £150 cheaper and the rest is history

Guess the spec wasn't the same between brands as according to the sand trap reciew, the vr's are definitely the right Nike std length

Manufacturers generally put all the specs on their websites so no need to rely on other sites.

Nike specs are here

Cleveland CG's (black) 7 iron also 37 inches (would be surprised if spec was that different to CG16)

From what I can gather 37 inches is fairly standard for a 7 iron.

As I_T_R says, have a word with your pro. He'll let you know if anything is amiss.

all this, and one man's gripping down is another's correct position! A huge number of handicap golfers don't have the top of the grip clear of their left palm, and suffer problems because of it.

Indeed. Sergio, for example, grips well down for all his irons.

How much of the grip is generally the right amount? cm's or inches? How far does the grip have to be before it's considered gripping down?

Thanks again for advice lads, as I said this was just something I was checking out when I was bored and as it turns out the Nikes specs on my irons match those of the CG16's I was fitted for. All except my irons are fitted with GP tour wrap grips which are mid size/2 layers and too big. Skinny hands just like Richy

Brian, I'm well overdue going down to see Nicky but have been putting it off until I've had a few lessons with Steve at Stocksfield. Chances are that issues can be ironed out (forgive the pun)with a few lessons but if there are any changes to make then Nicky is the man. I'm going up there this Saturday morning to have a chat and then to book some lessons. Steve is going to give me some basic setup drills to do before my first lesson and will take it from there. Hopefully he can fit me in before Slaley
