Question for the Irish contingent.....

I notice that "Golf Empire" doesn't include details of opens in Ireland (south of the border, that is). Potentially planning an Irish holiday in the summer and I appear to have been granted dispensation to play in an open or two while we're there....

Are there any decent websites out there listing these.....?

You mean in The Free State?

Which area are you going to? Some holiday areas have frequent Opens, and they are much less formal than in the SE of England. More like rollups for visitors. These are quite common in Donegal at a number of courses.

Hi Karen just go into ILGU website there is a section down the left with events & club opens etc that covers the whole country .
it also has Ulster (north) Munster (south) Leinster (east) & Connaught (west) sections ..
What part of the Island you coming over to

Very much at the hypothetical stage at the moment so I have some leeway to steer towards a location. We'd be going surfing as well so, broadly, somewhere on the west coast. Donegal might be a good shout - I know Bundoran is a good surf spot, for example!

Excellent - just what I'm looking for! Cheers!

If you're going surfing then Lahinch might suit you.. The Golf Course is right next to the car park for the beach as well.. You also have Doonbeg just down the coast..

Yeah, Bundoran and Lahinch are probably the two surf spots over there I could name without looking it up.... Good looking course at Lahinch but no opens as far as I can tell.

Bundoran is one course where I have played many Opens, and never booked one of them in advance, just turned up. Donegal (Murvagh) and Co. Sligo (Rosses Point) are both reachable from there, and are top rate links courses at very reasonable money.

Also, if you are driving from England/Scotland, you can include some fine Northern Ireland courses too, such as RCD or Royal Portrush. You will need to book those, though.

Cheers - sounds good.

Don't think I'll get away with HID hanging around while I play golf en route to our holiday destination though! :D It's more that I might be allowed to slope off for a morning or two during the holiday.

Just come over in July and play the ICC ;)

Seriously though if you are heading Bundoran direction there are some great courses around there. Strandhill is worth a look.

If you come to Bundoran and want a game I should be in a position to offer you a game at Murvagh with a wee bit off notice if there are no opens on. There are very few opens on at my place although there will be a week where opens are on in the summer.
Easiest way is just to call any club up and ask as most in Donegal will have an open during the week but they may be men only (although I am not entirely sure about that!)

Thanks Chris, you're a gentleman!

indeed, last summer, on Tuesdays IIRC, North West - a fantastic links - did roll up opens round & lunch for about 22 euro!!

Do that every Tuesday. The meal deal open. I actually played almost as many qualifiers there last year as I did my home course! Bargain and the golfers fry is a great way to finish a round.
