Morning all,

How do you find your internet download speed, I have tried 2 of the checkers on the internet within minutes of each other and they both have very different results.

Cheers

Midnight...

I have the speedtest app on my phone. so I can log onto a customers wifi and do a test
Find it pretty accurate

Don't forget, it just tests speeds from exchange to Router, it does not measure anything between router and your device, so wifi issues caused by the building you are in or distance from the router will not be detected.

Different results most likely due to different host test sites. For consistancy I use Speedtest and the same host.

10.28 MBPS according to speedtest, not great. I have BT broadband, speedtest graphic suggests my exchange is in Enniskillen, NI whilst I'm in west Scotland - is that correct? Undersea cable then I take it which I don't quite understand, why not have the exchange closer in say Glasgow for customers like me for example? Is Enniskillen a BT broadband base for many other parts of UK or am I misunderstanding how all this works?

I always clear cache and history etc before running speed tests. Currently steady at 99.46Mbps down and 6.24 Mbps up:)
Thank god for cable internet:)

or is it just the Speestest server that's based in Enniskillen? Getting 19+ mbps on a different speed testing website.

it has nothing to do with which exchange you are on. The location is where the server is that you are testing to.

on speed test you can go into settings a select where you want to test to.

unless I'm reading this wrong , what you say is incorrect.
Speedtest tests from device to server (wherever that is) not just router to exchange. Therefore if the wi-fi is slow or erroring the test will reflect this but won't tell you where the problem is. The best way to test the true throughput speed of your broadband is hard wired from the router with no other devices connected.

You're right. Ethernet cable into a laptop or PC is best with no other devices gives the most accurate speed. BT wholesale speed test is bang on.

I'd never test my speed over wifi using anything like a tablet or phone. Far too many variables that may make you think there's an issue with your line.

Also, all these speed test sites only test through put speed which can be altered my the provider. Sync speed is the best way to check but that would require a visit from an engineer.

Download sitting at 54.25 Mps and upload speed at 11.65 Mps. Is that good (as a PC luddite)

You shouldn't be asking if a set of speeds are good. (Good compared to what? It isn't good compared to fibre to the premises).

If you don't notice any performance issues then it's good enough for what you need it for.

Mine are hovering around 45Mbps download and 9Mbps upload.

Same for on WLAN and LAN, nowadays with the advent of 802.11n/ac your bottleneck should not be your wireless connection. Some things are outside your control but with a decent analyser you can mitigate most WLAN issues and improve your throughput a great deal.

I dread to think... 6.5mbps?

Put it this way, my 4G phone is apparently 3 or 4 times faster in town.

(No... we're not on fibre)

Nobody likes a show off. I get 2.4Mbps download and 0.35 upload. (But then I can only drive a golf ball 240 yards)

The joys of country living.
