I called a certain internet company (AOL) to complain about my internet speed. 0.12Mbs
Long story short instead of my usual payments of £25-£30 per month I have been offered 9 months free and the remaining 3 months for £20 per month just because I was going to leave AOL. I have a shiney new router and an engineer is calling to check the phone line into my house.

If the engineer cant fix it I'll be leaving for BT Internet and calls which will be free for 6 months, followed by £16 per month AND lots of goodies and speeds of 1.5 mbs min.

So if you think you arent getting a good service for your dosh, complain :)

Bob, we moved into our current village and via SKY got 2.5mb speed was delighted

Couple of guys around the corner who I play golf with have AOL and were getting 0.5mb and when complained were told anything faster wasn't possible. They too left AOL and went to SKY and speed went up from day one

Worth moving on and SKY will match or beat prices if you haggle

you would be surprised how many houses endure slower speeds than they are capable of just down to poor configuration internally or a network thats hanging on by its finger nails externally. As a rule of thumb I would say 2mb is the minimum for smooth web browsing these days but I assume your miles away from local exchange (assuming due to the speeds quoted) so 1.5mb will be blisteringly fast compared to now Bob :)

Beware of BT's promises. I live in a rural area and was told that I would get 0.8 Mbps when I signed up last year. I now get 0.34.

I phone sky once a year to cancel my Tv,landline & broadband. I'm currently getting £20 pm reduction for 9months. It's worth a 10min phone call.

AOL is one of the famously bad ISPs. You can almost certainlt do better elsewhere.

Always have a non-ISP email address; gmail, hotmail, mac etc so you are not tied to the ISP.

thats even slower than you currently have

P.S AOL is THE worst ISP and has been since the internet was started:rolleyes:

I was having problems with BT throttling the speed at various times and reducing bandwidth until I called them and miraculously it was turned up again. A few days later, same issue.

Ditched them to complete my sky package and have had no problems and consistently higher speeds than BT

The irony in this being Sky use BT services to carry their broadband service! I was a BT Openreach engineer when I first left the forces and spent half my time installing services for Sky Broadband! I left them though as they treat staff like crap, mind you the water industry is worse but it pays better!

As for broadband, can't beat my fibreoptic with virgin best service I've ever had and will not switch it.

I was getting slow speeds through Orange, everything was buffereing so upgraded to their fibreoptic and am getting 38 download and 7 upload, what a difference.

Strange

If I could get fibre optic bb where I live I'd switch in a heartbeat, although we have been told we might be getting it next year. patience.
But the good news is I have reduced the cost of my internet for the next 12 months from approx £300 to £60 with just one phone call :)

3 things here:

1. AOL still exist? WTF
2. You accept under 1mb as a speed worth paying for
3. Sky own! I was getting roughly 2mb in my old house, spoke to them and they had a shufty and I was up to 5mb :)

3. An engineer came yesterday to check everything was ok in my home and it was. Another engineer is coming to check the line to my house sometime but TT didnt phone back yesterday to arrange a time like they promised
