Iv'e just purchased a new putter with interchangeble faces. What is the ruling on changing the face mid round? Is this acceptable?

how about if the face got damaged during play??

would you be able to just change the insert or would it have to be the whole club?

I may be wrong but I think you can change the club if it has become damaged, I don't think you can alter the original or even carry on with it if it isn't the same as it was when you started.
But as I say, I could be wrong (has been known in the past)

4-2a During a stipulated round the playing characterisitics of a club must not be purposely changed by adjustment or by any other means

4-3a Damage in normal course of play If the players club is damaged in the normal course of play he may

i) use the club in its damaged state for the remainder of the round
ii) without undue delaying of play repair it or have it repaired
iii) as an additional option available only if the club is unfir for play, replace the damaged club with any club. The replacement of a club must not unduly delay play and must not be made by borrowing any club selected for play by any other person playing onthe course

Thanks homer, interesting to know with these new clubs. I guess that changing the face of a club would be deemed as repairing it and within the rules (so long as it is the same insert).

The 'welding' bit was just a joke, i might get some tape then.

Had been told at our course that it wasnt allowed. I asked a playing partner when i was leaving everything short!

Be careful with tape. Wasn't there an incident with Lyle and Faldo over some tape that Lyle had added or put back on after it came off and Faldo claimed he was changing the characterisitcs during the round. Cue one heated debate and the start of a fierce rivalry (almost hatred from memory)

I don't think that was added weight type tape Martin. I think Lyle put it there to stop the sun glinting off his putter.
I added a couple of stick on weights to my old putter and on a couple of occasions one came unstuck.
By the letter of the rules I shouldn't have carried on playing with it but I didn't say anything to my playing partners. I felt very guilty when I took their money at the end of the game but you win some, you lose some

Lyle put a bit of sticking plaster on the top edge to stop the glare. Faldo let him do it and then reported it after the round, result ~ ;) DQ

If the tape you added before the round comes off accidentally during the round, you can carry on using the club, but you can't remove it deliberately.

you're talking about having interchangeable faces, so unless you plan to be carrying spares, putting in a different face of different characteristics isn't 'repairing'. I'm pretty sure repairing has to be putting back as nearly as possible to the original condition.
